I've got a '95 4dr 4WD Blazer 4.3 w/K&N FIPK and 2.5" dynomax superturbo cat back exhaust, straight pipe in place of cat. Qeustion: will adding a 3" or 3.5" tip change the sound of my exhaust any? I'm looking for a deeper, throaty sound. Kinda like a v8. I know I've got a v6 but I want a better sound.
PS.hey mintstick...your truck sounds awesome ! |

Re: Tips on exhaust tips ?
i put a 40 series on my 2.2l and with 2 1/4 pipe and 3.5 tips....sounds like a v8 when idle but when i get up to higher rpm's it sounds a lil more high pitched but i really like it alot....i think tips will make it sound a lil bit deeper

Re: Tips on exhaust tips ?
a tip wont effect the sound much.
what u have for pipes after the muffler will effect the sound. if u want that throaty sound, more pipes and bends can deliver that to an extent. i did a test on this with my setup. ok, stock cat, stock pipes, traded out the muffler for a thrush 28in glasspack. tested various setups after the pipe. with no pipeing (2.5in opening) after the muffler, it sounded great at startup and idle, but rice at any rpm's. with a turn down (2.5in opening), it sounded almsot the same, but less rice through the rpm's with (stock) pipes (2.5 from muffler, to reducers, to 2.25 in pipes the way through) , it sounds simmaler to the v8 firebird my friend drives. edit: alot of the guyes here swear by their 40seriese flowmaster, but idk, ive never tried them. (but a whole forum can't be too far off) Last edited by DeMon76187 : 02-24-2006 at 02:13 PM. |

Re: Tips on exhaust tips ?
if you want it to sound like a v8, use my setup i have a 4.3 TBI...
buy a set of edelbrock shorty headers, 2.5" pipe, remove the cat, install a flowmaster 40 with duel outs, run duels out the back into 20" x 3" echo tips. I love my setup, everyones thinks i have a v8, which is what it sounds like up to 2400rpm. after that it starts getting kinda ricy... hold on i'll find the video of it... http://videos.streetfire.net/player....A-E3ED2D4A1861 Last edited by zeldalord : 02-24-2006 at 04:05 PM. |

Re: Tips on exhaust tips ?
Still never sounds like a V8 ever......Granted mine sounds really good also up to 2500rpm but it still doesn't sound like a V8 and those people that tell you are just retards.

Re: Tips on exhaust tips ?
No, if you want a V8 sound, go get a V8 fullsize or install a V8 in your s10....Never EVER does a 4.3L V6 sound like a V8

Re: Tips on exhaust tips ?
Exactly, You definitely can make a 4.3 sound really good that is for damn sure. Mine sounds awesome. Mint's sounds awesome and his brother truck sounded awesome but still none of them sounded like a V8. Mine will sound like a V8 next year that is for sure!!!

Re: Tips on exhaust tips ?
Tips can make a difference but it depends on the application. On a stock exhaust looks are about the only difference. But with a custom exhaust if you have room a longer bigger diameter tip will give you a deeper tone than no tip at all. A resonated tip will make it will make it quieter. Also make sure the tailpipe does'nt go into to the tip very far...more than an inch or so is too much and will negativly affect the sound.

Re: Tips on exhaust tips ?
Did some measuring, looks like a 13" long tip would be the max I could use without major exhaust rerouting. So will a 2.5" inlet 13" long 3" or 3.5" outlet have any positive affect on the exhaust sound?

Re: Tips on exhaust tips ?
Yes. I'd go with a 3.5" outlet. Definitely a weld on one, bolt on tips suck. imo

Re: Tips on exhaust tips ?
So is the consensus that a 3.5" x 13" tip would have a positive effect on my exhaust sound. Louder and deeper that is...

Re: Tips on exhaust tips ?
I just had a thought...I could go down to Advance and get a couple different sizes of clamp on tips to try out and see what affect I would get. I could just slip them over the end of the exhaust and not cut anything yet. When I figure out which size sounds best I could take them all back to Advance and order a weld on of the correct size from Summit. I could just tell Advance I don't have enough room under my Blazer for a tip. Kinda underhanded...but it's the only way I could think of to try different tips without spending a fortune. What do you think?

Re: Tips on exhaust tips ?
Yeah...I wouldn't use their crappy clamp-ons. Just gonna slip 'em on over my tailpipe to test different sizes for sound quality. Then I'll take 'em back and buy a good weld-on in the correct size from Summit. I plan on cutting my exhaust where it turns down/out behind the rear tire and then weld on a good tip to come out under the bumper. I only have single exhaust but I still think it looks better coming out under the bumper than coming out behind the rear wheel. I wish Blazers had room to run duals after the muffler without yanking the spare tire from under the truck.

Re: Tips on exhaust tips ?
Yes bolt on tips are for people who dont know anything about exhaust. If you knew anythig you would know that they rust really fast and are too small to affect the sound. About the best tips ive seen at auto zone. Are any store of this caliber is the thick resonator tips that are pretty much just a small glasspacks. When I made the exhaust for my truck I did the right thing and bought the tips from a exhaust shop and welded them on myself.![]() Last edited by ChevyDodgeboy : 02-26-2006 at 08:03 PM. |

Re: Tips on exhaust tips ?
it's pricy, but you'll never have to replace it, being stainless put that and magnaflow muffler and you'd have a very smooth mellow tone.
