Need to replace the cat on my Sonoma to weld a new one in. Can the y-pipe be removed after raising the truck on jack stands/ramps? My truck is a 4.3 auto if it matters.
Nope. It will only come out if you unbolt it on the ground and then lift the truck by hand......
Seriously though:
As long as the y pipe isn't routed under the tires, you can use wheel ramps.
I've never seen a y pipe routed outside of the rails or under the rails, so jack stands are a pretty safe bet, too.
If your going to weld in a new one just cut the pipe at the cat and weld the new one in. On my 98 the flanges for the cat are on either side of the trans cross member.
