notas10, straight pipe question
brother just purchased a 2006 mustang gt with a 5 speed, reports said 300hp base, and it scoots! his friend has a late 90's mustang (before the current body style) and it has straight pipes-$90 on a v8 with a 5 speed and it sounds pant wetting. he wants to do this and his friend wants him to.
the thing is, we want to know the power loss or gain from it. more than likely it will just be removing both mufflers and straight pipe in its place, keeping the cat/s. will this lose any hp, gain any, or just make the power at a diffrent rpm range? i had a straightpipe with a muffler on my old s10 and then had a cat put on and it didnt feel any diffrent between the two, but were talking about a 100hp engine there. dont need a lecture or 5 page study, just a simple "it will gain 1-5hp at low end and stay same at high end" or "it will stay the same, just be way louder" |

Re: notas10, straight pipe question
Hard to say for sure, but most likely it'll shake out like this...some of the low-end grunt will likely be pushed up the rpm range by 5-600 or so, and he'll likely see a little more pull at the top end. I use a words like "grunt" and "pull" instead of saying an actual horsepower or torque number because an actual number will be hard to quantify, but from my minimal experience with both 5.0 and 4.6 Stangs, that seems to be how the straight pipe setups work out.
