i need some help please

okay... this might be a stupid question but thats okay with me. Right now i have a flowmaster 40 series on my 99 s10. I have stock piping and i have it coming out right behind my rear tire.. single in and out i guess is what you call it. My truck sounds decent and lower rpms but while im crusing around like 45 or 50 i cant really hear it. Is there something better i could do to improve that. I want something that i can hear while im crusing around. Would dual exhaust do that or something. Give me some ideas please people. Thanks!

Re: i need some help please

Dual exhaust will indeed make it louder, if you run the same size piping your running now. Another option would be to keep the single exhaust, and simply step up a size or two in exhaust pipe, (eg: 2.25" to 2.5"). Or you could do both, run duals with larger-than-stock diameters.
Other options are install some headers, or remove the cat/get a larger size cat. Or if all else fails, and your still wanting the Flowmaster sound, you can go with the single chamber 10 series, plus some headers and a 3" cat. Overkill? Yes. Wake-the-neighbors loud? Absolutely. The sky is the limit, brother.

Re: i need some help please

Pricing is a tough call, lots of variables. If you supply the muff, probably around the $200-ish area.

Re: i need some help please

They're in the "race" section, not "mufflers"

Flowmaster, Inc.

Re: i need some help please

that's a hard call for anyone but you to make, but i can tell the race muffs are VERY loud...basically a straight pipe with a flowmaster twinge to it. If you're sticking with Flow (and it sounds like you are), i would stick with the 40 series, reg or super. I've had so many mufflers and systems on this truck i'm almost embarrased to admit it, but at one point i time or another, I've had a reg 40 single 2.5 in/out, delta 40 single in/out, reg 40 dual out, delta 50 dual, and finally super 40 dual out. oh, and one Pep boys aisle 3 turbo muff due to an unforseen deep pothole tearing up my 50 series.

Re: i need some help please

so your saying not to get the 10 series because its LOUD?... would it be better to stick with the 40 series and just run bigger pipes.. maybe what 2.5 or 3 duals?

Re: i need some help please

Again, loud is a subjective matter, but if you're only looking for slightly louder, then the 10 series is a bit of overkill. The fairly common route most guys with duals in this forum go with, including myself, is single in, dual 2.5" out. Nice tone at idle, good volume under full throttle, but yet you still carry on a normal conversation at crusing speeds.

Re: i need some help please

Re: i need some help please

That's definitely one you gotta feel out on your own. I'm a fan of going stright out the back, but thats def not for everyone. If ou can fins it in the exhaust sticky, there's a video of Mintsick's newest spintech dual-out exhaust. That's an excellent example of what a good side-swept dual exhaust looks like.

Re: i need some help please

Single in, Dual out Flowmaster 40 series, 2.5 piping with 3 inch tips... new cat... I made it all out of straight pipe and elbows... It sounds great, couldnt ask for much more, yet alone get much more sound out of it

Yeah, i brought the muffler in myself to the shop. I didn't use a cat, so I picked up a standard 3" header flange from Hooker (i think it was like $20 for the pair, still got one if you need it), and they ran the pipe back from that. The 3" collector fits up almost perfectly to the edelbrock T.E.S. flange. I say almost b/c i had to enlarge the bolt holes on the collector a bit, but it was minimal work at best. All total, they charged me $200. I also supplied the 2 dtm-style tips that are in my exhaust vid, which have since rusted out since they were shit, and were replaced with 2 standard 3 1/2" slash-cut 12" tips for another $40.

Here's a pic of what the flange looks like. the Edel flange is designed to work with the factory cat set-up, so even if you don't have these headers, the Hooker idea will still work if you decide to go the 3" route.

Re: i need some help please

I would, get a bigger 2.25" Y-pipe with no pre-cat step up to 3" pipe and gut the cat.

Question Re: i need some help please

Does anyone know if they make conversion exhaust headers for a 229 v6 for my 84 pickup? I am currently using the 350 conversion motor mounts.

Re: i need some help please

you really don't want it to be heard much at 45-50 until you get on it... but i found my spin tech sportsman muffler sounded nice at those speeds (and all other speeds inclusively) flowmasters tend to sound good only part of the time, like in WOT.
