How the **** does this happen?

Any ideas? No there was not a potato in my tail pipe. This is on a 98 2.2. Oh, I started smelling raw gas and the truck started missing soon after too.

Shotgun shell? I'm not too sure, but that's screwed up. I'm very curious to see what may have caused it. At least it was stock, not like an expensive upgrade, however you now have a reason to upgrade.

Re: How the **** does this happen?

It was a $20 from autozone. It has been on for 4 years. Yeah I am running a lil rich but thats only because I hollowed out the cat. It was F*cking LOUD (it was louder than my 9mm handgun). I took apart the motor and I cannot see anything that might have caused it except maybe the #2 sparkplug.

Without a working cat, unburned gas built up in the muffler...... That's what the cat does - helps to burn the unburned gas.......

Re: How the **** does this happen?

Anything to cause too much gas to end up in the exhaust pipe can blow the muffler. Shoot, ages ago, as kids we used to do it on moms car, by momentarily shutting off the ignition, then turning it back on, while going down the highway, it would make a nice Bang! sometimes blew the muffler

Re: How the **** does this happen?

I blew a muffler open like that years ago in a Cavalier wagon that belonged to my Dad. I was heading up a mountain, not doing anything crazy when...BANG!! Blew open right along the side seam.

We got a new muffler installed and never had another problem.

you forgot it would shoot a 4 foot flame out the tailpipe. i used to do it with my 1977 chrysler new yorker. man it was fun BANG it would go. i had the police called on me several times for disturbance and they said it sounded like a 12 gauge going off.

my blazer did this as well it built up too much and backfired threw the exhaust. get you a flowmaster and ull never have that problem again.

Re: How the **** does this happen?

LOL. Well it pretty much back fired since I hollowed the cat. Is there any other solution besides putting a cat back on?

Re: How the **** does this happen?

put the dizzy in 180* out so it's dumping raw gas down the tailpipe... then when the engine stops cranking, the last exhaust valve stays open and the too-late spark goes out the back and kaboom goes the nice pre-mixed air/fuel with no cat.

Re: How the **** does this happen?

I used to see this all the time when I worked at Autozone, mufflers would come back at least 3-4 a week like that cause there cheap shit.
