Headers...right or wrong?

I went up to a local muffler shop and told them i would like to get an exhaust made and a y-pipe made. I explained to the guy i would like the y-pipe to be 2 1/4'' and go into a 3'' pipe that would connect into my 3''(inlet and outlet) universal magnaflow cat. From there it would go into a 3''(inlet and outlet) spintech pro street muffler and i was plannin on puttin on some gibson tips after that. (I heard that the stock 4.3 headers flow fine) The guy tried to tell me doin an exhaust for the 4.3 is useless because im not gonna get any power out of it and if im not gettin new headers its still gonna choke the airflow anyway so unless i get headers there is no point in doin anything to the exhaust.(he says he's been in the business for 19 years?) So is this guy just bein an ***hole or is he right about the headers?

He is not right about the headers, on even a moderately modified 4.3 the stock manifolds are fine (I've seen good to 300hp). Some exhaust guys don't see the point in putting exhaust on something that isn't a V8 fullsize pickup or a legitimate "fast" car, I don't see why they'd comment on it personally if they want to make money.

Re: Headers...right or wrong?

^^ Mike's right. The system you chose will work pretty
well. You may lose some bottom end, but you should
gain it on top. I installed headers and wish I hadn't.

The heads can only process so much o2 stock. The
stock mani's are fine. I run a 2" ypipe since my ST
came with one and had the center replaced with a
round pc of pipe to get rid or the factory squished
section. It goes into a 2.50 cat out to a 3" pipe
before and after a 3" Flowtech muff. Tail pipe
ends under the rear bumper. It works fine. I'm
in no hurry anymore anyway with fuel as it is.

I think you'll be fine too. If the exhaust guy doesn't
want to do it, there are more places in the phone book.

Only thing I might question is that your user name
has lifted in it. Does that mean you run a large
on/off road tire ? Being you're going with 3" from
the ypipe back, the loss of low end torque may play
a bigger factor for you, I don't know..

No the only reason it has a 4'' lift kit is because the previous owner owned a restaurant and had to lift the truck so he could haul crates of food in the back without much trouble...here's a pic of it

Unless he's trying to add the headers to the bill.

When i told the guy i also wanted him to make a y-pipe he stared at me like i just told him the world was gonna end...lol so to break the silence i was like do you know what a y-pipe is...? haha and i think thats what ticked him off and then he was like i have been in this business for 19years of course i know what a y-pipe is but then he says i have to come back monday because he couldnt tell me how long it would take to get done or even a rough estimate of how much it would be.

Re: Headers...right or wrong?

Well I had a 2.25" y-pipe made to a single 2.5" exhaust with a big chrome tip and a dynomax muffler for $430. If you're supplying the cat and the muffler, and he's just bending and welding the exhaust, don't pay over $350 for it.

Re: Headers...right or wrong?

i put edelbrock tes headers on my 92 2.8l and it made a world of difference. i lost just a slight bit of power in bottom end but the mid and high range was amazing
