Got a new muffler today....

Well due to the fact that no one here in my town carries magnaflow, i was forced to get flowmaster. (at least i got rid of the apc fart can i had on my truck)

so i went to the shop to get a flowmaster original 40 series installed for $110 (only one they had) and i have no idea why people are saying it sounds like a cessna plane. actually, it sounds close to stock idling. Then i listen to clips of a flowmaster 50 series thats suppose to be quieter than the 40 and its louder than mine idling?? there is also no cabin drone with mine and its dumped behind the cab (1.5 FT. behind).

now i have heard that some people say there is a "break in period" even though its chambered and nothing can burn off to change the sound though carbin buildup is suppose to change the tone some

so do you guys have any idea why mine is so quiet? im also going to get the cat tested today (for free) to see if that might be restricting the exhaust enough for the muffler to be so quiet. btw: i have the 2.2L

Thanks for all your time

-Jonathan

Re: Got a new muffler today....

well i went to the muffler shop today and im getting 2 psi of back pressure from the cat, he said around 5 psi is when its considered clogged and you will have problems. so i guess ill get a magnaflow high flow cat. (104k miles on original cat)

and no im not looking for that v8 sound, im just wondering why the muffler sounded like stock when they first put it on.

Re: Got a new muffler today....

It's not on backwards, is it? Either that or it's not really a 40 series, could be a 50, or 60, series, they all look alike?

Re: Got a new muffler today....

dunno, its not on backwards though, is there a number i could check to see if it actually is a 40 series?

btw: it is getting louder. now its actually popping when i rev the engine so i belive i should give it a week or so to fully break in.

You're joking, right?

A flowmaster on a 4 or 6 cylinder does not sound like a V8...especially something as small as a 2.2L.

You are right about the cat making it quieter, though...lose the cat and it'd make more noise--but definitely wouldn't sound more powerful, or "like a v8."

Check the side of the casing. You're be a 5 or 6 digit number that starts with a 9, 5, or 4. If it starts with a 4, it's a 40 series, 5 a 50 series, and if starts with the first two digits as 94 or 95, that's a Delta Fow 40 or Delta Flow 50 series.

Re: Got a new muffler today....

well its been awhile since i have been on the forum (installing 1" drop springs then having to find out there defective) my muffler sounds good now, i have no idea why or if it broke in, but it sounds 10000X better than that fart can i had on it.

Thanks for the replies everyone. ill try to get a sound clip sometime if i can find a decent recorder.

my map sensor came unplugged and my 2.5l 4cylinder sounded like a cammed v8. blup... blup.... blup

i was like... sweeeeeet, no cat, vforce super turbo with a turndown before axle.

chambered mufflers take about a week for the tone to sound like it should, when i first had mine done it was nice and quiet, now its a hair louder, but im getting a misfiring sound. started awhile after i took my cat off, so im thinking a high flow cat and having the muffler welded on will help
