when i put a flow 40 on my 2.2L it sounded stock, the more i drove the louder it got. the muffler shop says they dont break in because its all metal, i call . about 600+ miles later and it broke in and you could hear that "V8" sound, and by V8 sound i mean 4 cyl.

Re: flow 40...sucks????

well your problem is you put it on a 4.3,and they will be pretty quiet for a few hundred miles.but i dont think flowmasters sound good on 4.3's or any muffler for that matter, other then stock.

Think whatever you want. There is NOTHING in it to "break in". No fiberglass to heat up or settle. The theory of Flowmasters breaking in is .

Exactly.Thank you.

http://www.s10forum.com/forum/f89/ho...9/#post4319906

I can't tell you how many people called bs when I posted that, but I also checked in with Spintech a while back, and Ron (from Spintech, obviously) said the same thing about any chambered or non-fiberglass-packed muffler.

btw..kinda off subject (sorta)..putting on the new Spintech Sportsman tommorow, so I'll be able to confirm the facts on "non-break-in" on that brand as well.

I agree, there is nothing inside to "break in", but im serious! im not just posting something just because i want to start shit. it sounded exactly stock, no noise, no indication i had an aftermarket muffler, no cabin drone NOTHING! so i called the muffler shop and asked them "wtf does my muffler sound stock?" they told me no break in but i can assure you, the DB levels did rise after 600+ miles or so. i even checked to make sure the muffler wasnt put on backwards.

I even made a thread about it because it was soo quiet.

http://www.s10forum.com/forum/f89/go...-today-324569/

after 7 months it sounds good now (IMO ), much louder than the day i bought it.

really, all we have to do is wait for chevyrules05 to put some miles on that muffler, then we will see if it gets louder or according to flowmaster, will sound like that for the rest of the muffler's life.

post a video of what it sounds like now, then later, post another one and lets compare to see if there is any "break in" period or change in sound....just for shits and giggles. part of me says, "no break in period you idiot, its all metal", but another part says, "it was quiet when i bought it, now its loud", leading me to believe something changed inside the muffler, but since the muffler cant physically change inside, how did it get louder? a trick of the mind?? or does the carbon buildup have anything to do with it since thats the only thing added to the muffler since it was removed from the box?

Re: flow 40...sucks????

i just put one on my 4.3L (98) with stock exhaust manifolds, ypipe, cat and it sounds a lot louder. Mine was dual outlet tho that might make a difference. I had a Super40 muffler on it about a year ago and that one sounded almost stock/quiet tho. Before this flow 40 i had a cheap thrush glasspack dumped, and the flowmaster is just as loud (although a much better sound) as that.

Re: flow 40...sucks????

What does "dump for back pressure" mean? If you are running a dump it should surely not sound "stock" it should be fairly loud already.

Re: flow 40...sucks????

ive got a flow 40 on my 2.8 S-10, and its loud as hell and sounds like a beast....many times while my truck is idleing, ive been asked if it has a V8 in it, and when i tell ppl its a 2.8, they dont believe me, lol....my truck sets off alarms sometimes....all it is is a stock pipe running back to a flow, and then no pipe after the flow, the exhaust stops at the flow, and its really loud....i wouldnt have it any other way

worst case scenario... what would happened if a muffler was put on the wrong direction? Like the inlet was now the outlet?

On a Flowmaster it has a dedicated inlet and outlet. They use sound deflection to muffle the noise. Sound waves are thrown out of phase and cancel each other out - thats why there is no packing....doesn't use any. If it is mounted backwards, it's not gonna work as designed.

Re: flow 40...sucks????

I'm with you beandip, I say they do hafta break in. I think from heating & cooling, the baffles rust, and get covered with carbon after awhile. This absorbs the high frequency waves, and slows the flow down causing them to reverberate more inside, and continually get deeper sounding, thats why they sound tinny, or ricey when you first put them on. By the way, your truck sounds pretty good for a 2.2!
