finding headers to fit

I'm gonna make this short.

I want headers (and probably vortec heads too)

But i was told they'd have to be torqued back down every other oil change or so.

Sounds like a pain, is it worth it?
Also, where can i find some headers that fit? Seen some in jegs but i think they were one year off from my truck.
1993 4.3L TBI "Z"

Passenger side would be fine but that damn steering shaft is going to get in my way i think.

Never had any issues...Torqued my bolts down once after install after 1000 miles as per the instructions, and checked 'em a couple of times since, but they didn't need re-tourquing (sp?) when checked. I'm sure they'll be others with a different experience, though.

Re: finding headers to fit

okay that's probably just the exhaust guys trying to avoid work cuz that's what they told me and my friend when he got his headers.

Now i just have to find some headers that will go on my truck!

i've heard of people making their steering shaft a two part so it kinda flexes away from their headers but i could be wrong...

Re: finding headers to fit

You have a few choices and yes after 1st startup
and cool down you should re torque the header bolts.
You should do this at least the first 3 times you go
for a ride after putting them on and then check the
at O/C time or every 6 months until they seat.

JBA makes shorties. Hedman makes long tubes,
Edelbrock makes a TES system. They are avail
for your 1St Gen. I run JBA's, but to tell you the
truth unless your engine as well as the heads
are modified, your just pissin money away.

I wish I had save the money and PITA installing mine.
Wouldn't do it again. Mine is a 92.

Re: finding headers to fit

you didn't have problems with the drivers side header?? My steering shaft looks like a pain...
yeah i don't have the vortec heads on my truck i'm really wanting to pull valve covers, heads/manifolds, and refurb some vortecs and bolt down some headers and drop them in. I've never done it before i'm sure it won't be as easy as i think. But i hear ya! I mean headers can only flow as well as your heads can.

Re: finding headers to fit

The shaft has to come out in order to get the l/s on and then
you reinstall it. The PITA is the bracket that holds the pwr
str pump in the bottom rear. Look at it and you'll see it's
connected to the 2 studs on num 1 cylinder. You can't
take it off without removing the bolt at the bottom of the
pump. In order to THAT, you have to pull the pulley and
disconnect the pump from the large alum bracket which
holds the pump !

What most guys do, is take a sawzall and cut that bracket
in 2 about half way down. I did it the hard way and didn't
reinstall it. I've never had a problem with the pump not
having it on.

If you do a search for installing headers, you'll come up with
a lot of info unless the site crash a yr or so back ate it all up.

Re: finding headers to fit

Hedman and hooker also make long tube headers for the first gen trucks, the steering shaft issue is a problem on 1st and 2nd gen trucks.
