emissions + p0420 = fail: remedies?
so, i put on a magnaflow high flow catalytic converter probably about eight months ago, due to my other cat having a hole in it. all was well, then a service engine soon light popped up about two months ago. it was intermittent; it would stay on for a while then randomly disappear, then randomly come back on. so, i go to get my yearly inspection, and they tell me that's the code i was pulling. it's a catalytic converter code. i was told that i must replace this cat with an oem cat. is this true? i asked if i could just replace the oxygen sensors, and they said if it as an o2 sensor failure, it would pull a different code. oem cats are expensive. my magnaflow cat sounds better with my exhaust. i don't wanna get rid of it, and be out a lot of money for a new cat. anything else i can do? i had my codes cleared and drove for 30 miles to get my readiness back to normal, and right around the 32 mile mark, my ses light popped back up.

sorri but you have to get an oem. when i got my exhaust re-routed i found that my cat was clogged, so i bang all the shit out of it and hollowed it, and 50 miles later i get the SES. unless you find a shop that will help you pass emissions i suggest you get a new cat before the end of the year, the guy that helped me with my exhaust work told me cat prices would double on Jan 1st. i dont know about other states, but thats what will happen in cali.

Re: emissions + p0420 = fail: remedies?
all it does is make the o2 sensor sit further from on the pipe so that a limited amount of exhaust reaches the sensor and your SES wont turn on, but it will do nothing for you to pass emissions, so you will still need a new cat

Re: emissions + p0420 = fail: remedies?
wait, your truck failed emissions because the MIL was on right??
So by doing a non-fouler, the MIL would go off, and therefore pass emmissions. I think everyone is thinking of a tailpipe or dyno test. And my high-flow went through the sniffer with the cleanest results I have seen on something its age in a LONG time (also had a somewhat new tune up). 170k+ miles on all origional motor and had 3ppm HC. |
