CRMB Y pipe installed 2001 auto, looking for ppl to step up
I am going to post some pictures of it when I get the chance, but for now I will explain what I ran into and what I think we, as a group, can do. Seriously
2001 S10 ZQ8 Auto Ext cab 4.3 Ok, first off I'd like to say I'm impressed with the look of the y pipe. Very nice. The fit however, is completely off, which is ok for a test run...to be expected. The alignment into the pre-cat was off and the O2 bungs were as well. So I told the exhaust shop "make it work and do it right" So needless to say it cost me a small fortune to have it modified. But it looks good. I removed the pre-cat when the pipe went in, I wasn't going to have that thing still there after all this. At the same time (80k miles) I had them replace the spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and front 2 O2 sensors. Knowing this, my gains will be distorted some because I have changed other things at the time of Y pipe installation. Having said this… I really like the difference. I don’t feel like I lost anything on the bottom end. If I have, it’s not noticeable enough to me to complain. However, the way the truck breathes after 1000rpm is great. It drives very nice and responds to throttle input better. Even cruising at a low 45 mph, with the trans in OD lock, the truck feels stronger. It will pull a lugging gear easier than before. The freeway manners are nicer as well. I feel like my throttle input is “lighter” on the gas pedal. WOT is improved as well, it just pulls easier. I can’t wait for my lake trip coming up, I want to see how well it tows now. Now, I don’t know if this has to do with the tune up or the Y pipe, could be just the tune, dunno. However, it drives very nice, and sounds really really good. I run a 50 series flowmaster single in single out with an over the axle dump. I went this route (this time) cause I wanted a mellow sound that didn’t annoy me. At the same time, when at WOT it sounds good and not hollow. I also already knew my Y pipe was going in sooner or later, so the muffler would be a good match for the pipe and minus pre-cat. It sounds great, a deep mellow and throaty sound. It revs faster now and sounds so damn cool. Great combo FYI / IMO. Next year will be my first smog check here in CA with the pipe and minus cat, hopefully it should do fine as long as they don’t look hard. Ok, here is what I’m willing to do and what I think others might be willing to fall in line for. Since no one wants to travel all that distance on there own, for free, I say we start a fund. I now have a CRMB Y pipe modified to fit a 2001 auto. It has only one clearance issue that should be worked out by CRMB for any future production. The pipe is really close to the trans pan and I plan on putting header wrap on the pipe in this one location about 1ft across. Since my truck in only a zq8 and wont be getting any lower, ground clearance was never an issue for me. Having said that, the pipe does hang down some, maybe the same as stock, maybe a shy bit more, dunno. I know pictures will help, hang on they are coming soon. What I am willing to do. I will drive to Oregon from Los Angeles only if I get some help from those truly interested in helping this project out. It’s about 1000 miles one way for me, but I am serious about taking the drive only if I get help. A 2000 mile round trip, using a truck that gets an average 17-21mpg will run about 100 gallons of gas. 2000/20=100 Which 4.50 a gallon = 450 bucks. I would be willing to chip in like 20 bucks. It doesn’t sound like much, but I’m already paying for my own hotel. I will also be taking off work, which might be planned anyway since my foot is screwed up. I’ll prolly site see while they are using my truck. Only problem I can see with them using my truck…is that I don’t have a pre-cat anymore, nor the location it used to be in. I do have their y pipe and u can clearly see where the collector ends. Dunno, but before I keep chattering on and possibly wasting my time, I’ll wait for some replies. I promise pictures within the next couple of days. |

Re: CRMB Y pipe installed 2001 auto, looking for ppl to step up
Not many of us are looking to keep the pre-cat, since we were looking for a more performance oriented y-pipe than the Magnaflow.
I am willing to send some money your way. What are we looking at? $20 each? I am still trying to figure out what I am going to do, because I bought one, and right now, the weather is too bad to have downtime with the truck and FedEx lost my Argon tank. I could also make mine work and mail it to him. Thanks for stepping up and doing something. |

Re: CRMB Y pipe installed 2001 auto, looking for ppl to step up
^^ This is what I wanted to do as well, modify it and then send it his way. Unfortunately all my stock stuff is in the trash, so I can't go back. Plus the pipe is welding in place permanently, so it would need to be cut out and then reinstalled after they use it for measurements. I have a feeling the pipe will help a lot, but just having a truck there might be the best.
Can I get some pictures of STOCK y pipes on vehicles between the years 97 and 2003. This way I can compare my 2001 and see just what years my truck will be helping. Or if anyone works in a dealership or knows someone, can you pull up part numbers and compare? If I were to guess, 1999-2003, but guessing at this point has become stupid and not worth anything. Send them to DirtDevilBT@yahoo.com. And $20 each from those that were on the "I'll buy one" list would be perfect. I'd also think anyone contributing should be at the top of CRMB's list once production is restarted. $20 from the folks with the same truck as mine sounds fair enough. If you don't care about the y pipe I use, maybe we can start multiple funds and have a fund for each year/tranny/cleanance of pipe. Then let those funds go to other members with those types of trucks. I think Paypal would work best, even though the fees suck. Maybe a middle man between me and the funds would keep folks happy. I dunno how to make this any more "trustable". It's people sending me money to do something. Not long ago there was a scam on my ATV forum, so I understand not many people like these kinds of ideas. I can't say or do anything to MAKE any of you feel secure about this, so I'm all ears as to what you want to do. Last edited by BLACKBOWTIESS10 : 07-12-2008 at 10:57 AM. |

Re: CRMB Y pipe installed 2001 auto, looking for ppl to step up
a crap load of pictures
the pipe hangs down just past the trans mount bracket I don't have a picture of the stocker. I'd be curious how far it hands down. I also came across something looking at the pictures, lol I'm missing a nut for the exhaust. I'll have to talk to them about that. I took a video for sound, but it didn't come out well. I'll try later some time. Last edited by BLACKBOWTIESS10 : 07-13-2008 at 05:58 PM. |

could the shop ovalize the pipe so it would be tucked up more? Wouldnt lose any flow, just flatten it out a bit..

Re: CRMB Y pipe installed 2001 auto, looking for ppl to step up
i guess im in to paypal you some money what do we need to do, start a sign up sheet then all of us paypal you the money all at once, i would say either ask for a little bit more like 25 or take a little bit more people, that way there is something in it for you instead of you just breaking even.
if you want to do the sign up sheet thing i guess ill start it, then everyone after me can copy and paste and just add their name to it 1. 99xtrm |

Re: CRMB Y pipe installed 2001 auto, looking for ppl to step up
a sign up sounds good all
my truck is a 2001 s10 auto ext cab 20 bucks needs roughly 25 ppl 25 bucks needs roughly 20 that's splitting 500 bucks up I guess I'll throw my hat in, even though I already have one ![]() PS> thanks for the pictures civil, that's awesome. And my truck is on blocks currently, was doing the front brakes until no shops around here could turn my rotors, now I'm driving around the spare for a couple days. So, in a couple days I will have some decent sound clips for you. if you want to do the sign up sheet thing i guess ill start it, then everyone after me can copy and paste and just add their name to it 1. 99xtrm 2. yellow035speed 3.Blackbowtiess10 (Brent) |

Hey, let me know when they start producing this Y-pipe and for how much. I may go ahead and buy one. I'll just put it away until I get the truck that I want.
Also, send some pics of the production piece to me once they have one. |

Re: CRMB Y pipe installed 2001 auto, looking for ppl to step up
before I put my address up I'm going to call CRMB and show him this thread. I want to make sure he is actually still interested before any of you or I get carried away with this. I don't want any of your money until I know he will welcome me. So, I'll get back to Uzz guys. Tomorrow I'll have sound.

Re: CRMB Y pipe installed 2001 auto, looking for ppl to step up
no^^
Here is a quick video for sound. It's not that great but you can just make out the note difference with the pipe. It is much deeper and rumbles like it should. I do have the pre-cat removed. Sounds great IMO. This is with a 50 series Flow, not a spintech or some louder Flow etc. I apologize for the traffice noise, I was coming back from the lake and took the video while coming home, instead of at my house where my neighbors would sport confused looks out their windows. But, you can hear it in the last two parts of the video. It is metallic sounding, I like it but might not be to the taste of some. You can hear it best on the last part, where the camera is in the back. In the very beginning of each rev, you can here a note, definitely not stock hehe. Love it, the note is heard only under load....like WOT 1st and 2nd...then it's gone. ![]() |

what about gains from the pipe?
Did you gain any High RPM power? DId you loose any low end? Does it not feel held back when you romp on it now? |

Re: CRMB Y pipe installed 2001 auto, looking for ppl to step up
Hey, I was just talking with CRMB..
everyone who's interested in this 4x4 Pipe should call about it. They are making a run of them in the next few days so they have to know how many to make. The ones already made are spoken for. |

Re: CRMB Y pipe installed 2001 auto, looking for ppl to step up
High rpm = yes, it revs easier, quicker, and stronger, where as before it fell on it's face after 3k rpm. Lowend loss = none, it pulls higher gears easier and starts from a dead stop just the same WOT feel = great, it continues to pull where as before it fell off in the upper range. It also pulls a trailer a little easier, a little easier, it's not a v8 now. While it's nothing amazing, it is a very nice change. You're not going to smoke tires or accelerate so fast the needle blurs, but it does seem to breathe easier and rev out nicer. Call me crazy, but it when it revs high, it might be a little smoother (ie: vibrations). |

Re: CRMB Y pipe installed 2001 auto, looking for ppl to step up
You answered my question perfectly thanks.
I can't wait to get my 4x4 pipe although Im waiting for them to call me back as to when they make the next batch? ( a few days maybe?) I think I know what your talking about with the "vibration" seems after 3000rpm with the throttle wide open it has like a kinda buzz/vibration(dont know how else to describe it), that's not there when you rev it under load whereas you aren't fully opening the throttle. |

Re: CRMB Y pipe installed 2001 auto, looking for ppl to step up
I read all about spintech, flows, headers, etc...but not too much about y pipes and I've got to say, that stocker is terrible. I've got about 350 bucks into this thing ( y pipe, modifications, install) and it's done. I can sit back with pen in hand, and check this mod off. Then, you'll never hear from me again, and this thread vanishes like a fart in the wind. Later, a new thread posing the same questions and ideas will be started, and the cycle continues. If you don't like the pipe, go with an Eldelbrock TES system and modify it to accept air injection. Or for those without smog, don't. There are ways to do it, I chose to keep the stock manifolds and smog because I'm in CA. Someone will need to call up CRMB for me and ask. I most likely will not be able to for some time since I don't get home till long after the shop closes. I'm also pretty busy during the day to make the call, I prolly could, but why? I am not going to beg or coach people into hopping on board this thing. After all, I've asked several shops to make this y pipe, I've talked with CRMB, I've excepted the challenges and did what I could.....I'm done and moving on to the next mod. |
