cherry bomb glasspack?

so ive got a 2003 4.3 s10. i basically cant afford a full duel exhaust right now. so my question is ive heard of guys using glasspacks. first where is a cherry bomb welded? is it (cat-glasspack-then straight pipe)? or is it (cat-straight pipe-glasspack-then another straight pipe)? not sure how it works. but my main question is will it sound any different than my stock exhaust? thanks for any help

Re: cherry bomb glasspack?

Thrush has glass in them as well... Try looking at some of Cherry Bombs chamber mufflers. Same design as Flowmasters ect... but cheaper.

or what do you guys think about flowmaster 40 0r 44 series with just a straight pipe? i can buy the muffler then bring to exhaust shop and they can weld a straight pipe? what is the best size pipe? 2.25?

Re: cherry bomb glasspack?

No flowmasters lol. Magnaflow, Spintech, Cherry Bomb Pro like you stated. Yes they can weld the pipe. 2.25 is a pretty common size for S10s to run after the muffler.

Re: cherry bomb glasspack?

Shit=Glasspacks. That's what they used in the 60's, that's why all the old ****ers run them. Best all around sounding muffler setup for a 4.3 is a magnaflow converter w/ a magnaflow steel muffler 1 in center, 1 out offset(think 18") on stock pipe. Best sounding setup through all RPM ranges.

Re: cherry bomb glasspack?

I have had both. On my 92 blazer that was totaled, i wanted a good sounding agressive muffler, so i had my exhaust shop weld a cherry bomb in place of my muffler, sounded awesome. But i was like you and wanted dual exhaust, so after i got some funds built up i bought a flowmaster 40series, and its sounds damn good too. but after i had it on my 92 for about a week, before i got the rest of the pipes ran, a guy hit me at atleast 55 when i was stopped, and that was that. Then when i purchased my 96, i pulled the muffler off at the cat, and had them weld it up with duals pipes. but he did **** me because i wanted 2.5" pipe and he only gave me 2". It still sounds GOOD. But if i were to do it all over again, i probably would just have had the glasspak then to a y-pipe to get the dual exhaust look. the only draw back in my blazer was the drone inside of the cab, but with a truck, you probably wont have that problem. the glasspak is what i would do. i dont like the magnaflows.....

I have my pipes ran all the way to the back and cut off where you can't see them, I have hardly any interior noise. The Magnaflows I've heard on V8's don't sound good, the Flowmasters I've heard on V6's don't sound good.

agreed. i like magnaflow, but when i had it on my ykuon, didnt sound to great. so i went to a 8 inch cherry bomb glasspack. sounded perfect, no drone.

Re: cherry bomb glasspack?

Just go with the Thrush Glasspack and weld it on after the Cat. Yours may differ but I'm runnin a 95 4.3 with the cat, glasspack, and a 45 turn down exiting under the bed and it sounds great.

Re: cherry bomb glasspack?

How can I recommend a cherry bomb if the seller of my s10 just recently got it(looked new as well)and it was already leaking... WTF? The previous owner screwed my setup for exhaust as he did not leave enough pipe to get to the back or side. Anyways me and my buddy pulled that trash off. Before it sounded ricey and did not reach high revs as fast. We left the cat, the pipe exits under the frame before the tire, yes underneath, I have no money to fix it. But damn does it sound great, my friend got scared when he fired it up, it surprised him.

Why? Some people around here have them. They sound like shit and get made fun of.

Quote:

That's a bogus theory. I have around $130 in my magnaflow muffler and magnaflow cat. I am all about saving money on parts but at the same time will not run something cheap that doesn't sound, look, work, etc. good.

Running glass packs today is like installing Windows 95 on your computer.

When I was 17 I had glass packs installed on my Tahoe because the shop owner said they'd sound good and loud. They were replaced with a 40 series flowmaster within 3 days.

If you guys think they sound good then good for you. I'm just saying I think they sound like shit and don't see how anyone could think they sound better than a flowmaster, spintech, etc...

Re: cherry bomb glasspack?

Many of the magnaflow are glasspack, uh "... straight-through perforated stainless steel core, stainless mesh wrap and acoustical fiber fill ...", a variation of the basic glasspack design for more $.

Thrush also makes more then just glasspack like a turbo muffler.

A good sized glasspack in full exhaust is not too bad, but I used $20 Thrush turbo in place of OEM style muffler. If you want louder in the cab dump the exhaust under the body, if you can, but I thought that drone on highway was obnoxious (inspector didn't like no tail pipe either). What "sounds good", or loud, or good enough for the $, is subjective, have to decide for yourself. Pick one and try it, perhaps without or with tail pipe before clamping it in tight.

BTW, "straight pipe" generally means only pipe (no muffler etc) as in "straight pipe from converter back", or also without converter as in "straight pipe all the way back", not that the pipe is actually straight/unbent.

It has a single cab, cause one cab is enough.

Re: cherry bomb glasspack?

I never said they weren't made similar, I know exactly wheat my muffler has in it, and your right. I'm referring to the tone they give off.

Straight pipe to muffler makes V8 sound so much better

Re: cherry bomb glasspack?

I had a cherry bomb on my 2.8 beretta when I was 16. It actually sounded a lot like a flowmaster 40 series until you let off the gas and it cracked and popped. I did scare some people with the cherry bombs popping sounds before. See someone walking away from you, creep up behind them and drop it in 2nd and let the clutch out and watch them poop. It almost sounded like gun shots. I kinda miss my cherrybomb. If you can deal with the crackling popping sound which I imagine would be as bad on an automatic trans than I say go for it.

Re: cherry bomb glasspack?

It's just that someone mentions glasspack, or says they like glasspack and they get blasted how screwed up they (the person and the glasspack) are. Then often they are recommended what is not much more then a large bodied glasspack. OK they sound different, lot more muffler and pack in the same length. Not that I run either.

It has a single cab, cause one cab is enough.

Re: cherry bomb glasspack?

I've always ran flowmasters on my V8's, but I've heard a couple on V6's and they don't sound so hot, I heard a magnaflow on a V6 and it sounded pretty good.

Ok I looked it up. My muffler has no packing so I was wrong:

I have a 3 chamber oval Magnaflow, pretty sure it is http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/s...e=main&id=8182 but it's been about 2 years since I put it on so don't quote me on that.

Yea I think most performance mufflers use chambers instead of fiberglass or other deadening material. The 40 series has a series of walls which helps muffle the sound.

Re: cherry bomb glasspack?

That depends on both make and model of the muffler. They can use combinations of perf pipe, baffle, chamber, and fiber fill. The classic "turbo" can have all those, 3perf pipe, 2baffle, 3chamber, and center chamber fiber filled (or wrapped) around perf pipes.

Most Magnaflow universal (other then XL) from what I see are a variation of glasspack. Many makes (brands) have a version whether or not they call it glasspack. Magnaflow, Borla, Dynomax, Thrush, Cherrybomb, Maremount, Walker, Summit to name a few.

It has a single cab, cause one cab is enough.

Re: cherry bomb glasspack?

Yo I'm in the same dilemma here, so I'm guessing the brand to go in this forum would be a magnaflow or cherry bomb extreme. But the thing is, should I leave my stock exhaust with the angles or should icut the angles off and put straight pipes on? I'm sure straightpipes will make the glasspack sound better

Re: cherry bomb glasspack?

the 4.3L has a nasty, raspy, resonation to it when on the throttle, a glasspack will amplify this nasty-ness... just get a flowmaster... alot of your jankier exhuast shops carry fake flowmasters that sound just like them, without the price. and on these motors, you wont really gain anything with a dual exhuast... slightly better sound, but running straight pipes or glasspacks, would just ruin the sound
