Cat or nay

Just wondering if not running a cat on my 98 4.3 s10 will cause any major problems or not. Other than the legality issue is there any other major reason why I couldn't just ditch the cat? It's rattling like crazy and I'd rather just get rid of it. Thanks for the help!!

Re: Cat or nay

CEL and won't be able to pass emissions (if you have these in your area) with the CEL triggered (o2 simulator, editing the post cat o2 out with a PCM tune, spacing the o2 sensor, etc can fix the CEL issue). IMO I have done both and after finally ending up with a high flow cat on my last system I would never bother not running a cat on an obdII vehicle again. A quality high flow cat honestly produced the same sound as running no cat did for me but without the eye burning raw fuel fumes/smell.

taking a cat off helps your exhaust flow better.

meaning-your truck can shit better, so now it can eat better.
what makes you think it hurts mpg

Re: Cat or nay

well, i guess it depends on where your sensor is. Mine was before the cat, so it still reads the same thing as if the cat was still there.
And i took off my magnaflow "high flow" cat...yeah right, that thing was some kind of gimmick my truck was much more toned after i tossed it

Re: Cat or nay

There is no mpg loss from not running a cat converter, period. Sound output between no cat and a high flow cat is debatable, like I mentioned before I went from no cat to a Spintech High Flow and noticed no difference in tone.

Re: Cat or nay

There is a huge difference in sound from no cat to having a cat along with my magnaflow 40 series. I have a obdII model with a straight pipe, and have yet to throw a ECM code.

I said between a high flow cat and no cat, there was a noticeable difference with a stock cat. Either way nowadays there is really no good reason to not run a cat.

I'm with Ryo. I'd pay the 60 dollars and not have my truck smell like shit and put out better emissions rather than leave it cat-less.

It might depend on the vehicle , I cut off the cat on my truck and replaced with a section of pipe now it has a noticeable loss in fuel economy just going on how often I have to fuel up compared to before. I have no idea why, dosent make sense.
