anyone build thier own muffler

I have some 14ga steel laying around, and a welder. I would have to borrow a plasma, but thats not a huge problem. My truck is bagged and lays frame, and so far I've only found one muffler that will fit where I want it to go. Its made by spintech, and is more money than I have right now.

The steel is free.
The welder use is free.
The plasma only requires the returning of a favor.

Really all I would need to purchase is two 3inch sections of pipe, about 6 inches long.

Now Im not afraid of the fabrication, but all I would really be able to do is copy an existing design. Anyone know anything about sound resonance and muffler building?

perforated tube with steel wool packed around it in a bigger tube.
we used stainless. dont ask me why

I've always wanted to, drew some up in CAD in high school but have never made one. If I did I would definitely spring for stainless just so you never have to worry about it rusting out.

Re: anyone build thier own muffler

Hey Dustin, we got our first look at the baby today. Kim is 4 weeks and 3 days pregnant, and the baby is about 1/5th of an inch long. Thanks for the words.

As for the muffler: Greencactus, I thought about that style of muffler, but Ive had a dynomax bullet and I didn't like it, but I still had both cats on the truck. I'm sure it will be much louder now.

I was thinking about copying the design of the old two chamber flowmasters, only the muffler would be 3inches tall, 8 inches wide(two separate sections four inches wide, welded together.), and 12 inches long. I wont be selling these so copying the design would be legal.

I also thought about coming up with my own design, but I would have to do a ton of noise cancellation, and reverberation research, and I just don't have the time, or the steel for trial and error.

Here is a very quick sketch of two designs I am contemplating: but like I said, I don't know shit about sound physics.

Re: anyone build thier own muffler

its not just about sound, you dont want to 'clog' the airflow either.
which both your sketches look like they might do, but i dunno.
make one that 'looks right' to you lol
also, its not just about bouncing them into a corner.
you want them to cancel eachother out

Re: anyone build thier own muffler

So I acctually need to figure out the perfect length for one or two baffles like a 2 or 3 chamber muffler with the chambers at the perfect length for the 4.3 v6. Cancel out some of the high pitched frequencies, and roll out. Yeah, Ill get right on that.

Goes back to googleing muffler construction, and theory.

yea, well im sure hacking something together will work somewhat, and it might have an actual nice tone too lol
i dunno, if i were making mufflers, id make like 5 in different constructions and take the one that sounds good lol

Yeah, but I only have enough steel for maybe two. So Imma figure out what I wanna do, and just build it. If it sounds like shit, Im out a couple hours work, and Ill just weld my good turbo muffler back on.
