putting anything on wont make it as loud as just cutting the whole exhaust off

It all depends on what you want to spend and the ind of sound you want. A flowmaster or magnaflow will sound better. What you will find here, is you will get bashed if you dont spend hundreds on exhaust. Advance auto is stocking a few magnaflows and flowmasters. May check them out. Comes down to what you want to spend and the sound you are looking for.

Not everyone's opinion of good will match your opinion of good. If you hate how it sounds stock, try a magnaflow or something. Just remember that it is a 4 cylinder, don't expect it to sound like anything it's not.

I've got a 2.5 1991 S10 with an off-brand turbo muffler on it that accidently got welded on backwards, doesn't flow any different, but it doesn't quite muffle sound like it should.Doesn't sound like a V8,but not bad for a 4-banger.

^ why bump old shit?

My last one had 2.5" from the stock manifold, no cat, flowmaster 50 series. It actually sounded decent at idle. Got a lot of complements on it and they were shocked when I said it only had a 2.5

Re: 1991 chevy s10 2.5l what is best thing to put on it to make it sound good?

I received my 2.5 with no cat, 2" piping back to a 18" glasspack flipped so that the open end of the louvers were facing the flow of the exhaust, with a full length tail pipe. It sounded ok, it wasn't very loud, or ricey either. Sounded like a old tractor or a boat.

Then I got creative as a 18 year old and built my own muffler out of some 8" diameter, 3/8 thick casing. First chamber had a ring of perforated steel suspended inside, next chamber had a large v shaped baffle in it, with dual 2" outlets. Took it to a muffler shop and had them run 2" duals out each side behind the wheels.

The result? It sounded like a bulldozer when idling, sounded like an airplane going down the highway, no drone inside the cab somehow, and if you floored it it sounded like a honda with no tailpipe. All that effort to make something sound like shit! Stupid.

If you want to hear more noise, you can cut the pipe off behind the muffler and put you a turn down on there. Tailpipes on these trucks look weird anyway. It'll make a little more noise and you might gain like 1/8 of a horsepower depending on how many convoluted bends your tailpipe has in it.

1984 S15 2.2 Diesel.
1988 S10 2.5 5-speed lowered 4/4.
