Re: Winter Storage

Drive it as much as you can so there's not too much gas in the tank, get all the fluids changed/checked, and try to store it in a warm place, with a cover pulled over it... oh yeah, and put out some moth balls, and mouse traps. This will keep rodents, and other things from getting into your motor, and/or chewing up your wires. Also, there is a fuel additive that keeps your gas from going bad, and if you don't have one of those things that keeps your battery charged, turn the truck on, and tun it for about 20 minutes atleast 2-3 times a week... that's what I would do anyway, but it doesn't get that cold down here, so I just drive it all winter.

Re: Winter Storage

i usually recommend a storage unit. a nice dry place, with a hard, cold, concrete environment that isn't very critter, or mold friendly.
back it in. put it up on jack stands. that elimintes flat spots from the truck sitting still so long. maybe do a proper nitrogen fill on the tires(vacuum the air out before filling).
change the oil. have fresh oil in it for the idle/storage period. maybe even change it when you park it in its spot for storage.
run the fuel out of the tank. if you can get a fuel pressue gauge with a bleeder hose, jump the fuel pump relay pins, and let the pump run till its empty, but don't walk away, as soon as it runs out turn the pump off.
take some paper plates, place a little pile of baking soda in them, then put them on the floor boards. its odor control to avoid rank musty-ness.
if you really want to go all out. find some large dessicant bags and put those in the truck, with the windows up, to absorb moisture from the interior while its stored.
the last thing i can think of is to take the battery completely out (if its gonna be stored for like 5 months or so).

Re: Winter Storage

no....no...no. you are suposed to have a full tank of gas when storing a car. i read it on ls1 tech. it has something to do with the ingredents in the gas.

Re: Winter Storage

I care about my vehicles, all 3 of them and not one of them gets any kind of special treatment for winter storage. its all unnecessary BS that companies sell to make more money every winter. My Camaro sits every winter for the past 6 years and it sat all year this year, a dead battery is all i got to deal with, fires right up no problem. runs fine.

Re: Winter Storage

Park em...pull the battery. Depending on the tires sometimes I'll put on some old rims and tires.
I drive my truck though.

I agree, but there's nothing wrong with wanting to be EXTRA careful with one's investment(s). For instance, if you had that battery tender, then your batery wouldn't have died, but I do think that a fuel stabalizer is a bit over the top, because I think it's meant for vehicles that are gonna sit for ATLEAST a year, or MORE!... but I could be wrong. *shrugs*

Bad idea in the cold... hot motor and cold air causes condensation, which causes rust in an undriven vehicle. Not to mention having a battery in the truck is just asking for a fire, haha

Just clean it up, cover it up, throw some Sta-bil in the gas, give it a fresh oil change, and take the battery out.

He's right....Don't start it while in storage. Just pull the battery, or put it on a maintainer.
