Re: Whats best for removing rust?
The only true way to get rid of it is sandblast, but most likely thats not an option. I would just scrap all the undercoating off you can (if any left, wipe the rest off with some cleaner). If theres a lot of rust build up, yeah use a disk, just be sure to watch your paint. Or you can just use a DA with some 80 grit in the spots you can reach.

Re: Whats best for removing rust?
When I went to paint my frame, i took it all down with a scraper and a wire wheel. Worked great!

Re: Whats best for removing rust?
when i done mine first time i used a angle grinder with a wire wheel and it done nice job. you can brush some of that por 15 on it afterwards and it will keep it from rusting through again. but now im working on finishing the cab for the b/d and i'm going to sandblast it down.

Re: Whats best for removing rust?
ive read lots of bad things about POR15. even people that brought it down to bare metal and used all the prep stuff like METAL READY, it still peeled off.
for as expensive as por15 is, and the stories out there about it peeling, i wouldnt recommend it. look into some other brands... |

Re: Whats best for removing rust?
I used por-15 on my frame. It seemed like it took about a full week or week and a half for it to completely cure. anytime I would lay a socket or even just a screw driver down on it it would chip at first. now I can beat it with a hammer and it wont even crack. I dropped my fuel cell on it, had about 5 gallons of fuel in it, when I was mounting it a few months ago and you can't even tell where it hit.

Re: Whats best for removing rust?
so goodluck with the por15? i was debating whether to use that myself. and for my frame im workin on now, ive used flap disk, grinding wheel and wirewheels. wirewheels on the angle grinder ive used most commonly, and i think it works best. make sure u wear some kind of eye protection with wire wheels, i was pullin wires out of my clothes for about an hour and that shit sticks in skin pretty good. lol

Re: Whats best for removing rust?
oh and yea..those wire wheels can be dangerous. i've had multiple encounters of the loose wires going through my clothes and sticking my arms and legs. id advise full face shields lol. they dont always work tho, cut off on a grinder got lodged and shattered sending half a disk under it and through half my chin.
