Re: what polish? not wax

Griots came out with a #4 Polish not too long ago. I thought the #3 was gentle. It doesn't take out very many defects, but it eliminates dust scratches on darker colored cars. I imagine it would be safe to use on new finishes. You could always call them to make sure there is nothing in it that would leave a film on the surface.

He's taking about the wait period after you just finish painting the car. When the paint is curring(?).

Why polish if it's new paint? Polishing removes swirls, light scratches, oxidation, it's for paint correction. Think of polish as a very fine grit liquid sandpaper.

I like 1Z Einszett Paint Polish and Metallic Polish Wax, the Poorboys SSR line (1, 2, 2.5, 3) Mequiars 82 and 83 are good, and Menzerna IP and FPII to name a few.

Exactly. You usually don't need anything abrasive after the final wetsand and buff at the paintshop. Since there is no wax on the new paint, it tends to get light scratches very easily. The #4 polish would work well at removing those light scratches and since it isn't abrasive, you'll get a nice shine out of it. I think it would work very well until your able to put a coat of wax on it.

If it's rattle canned. I'd wait a day or 2 and then wax it.. That's what I did with my dash.

nah, if it's real paint, i'd wait atleast 5-6 weeks until you waxed any of your new paint

Re: what polish? not wax

, but just ask the shop if you are worried. When my Mustang was painted, the shop gave me a little instruction guide for caring for the new paint.

i've never herd the term "colorsand" but im assuming he just means sanding?

wet sand 1000/1200 scratches, if you got a good amount clear left and a subborn scratch 800 wet is fine. if u want it really flat go over the whole thing with 2000 wet, i find it to be a show car only thing tho, but thats just me. always use a block when you can. after that compund and glaze.

I was just asking why he was wanting to polish the new paint, what was the defect he was trying to buff out or polish out, same difference. That cutting compound you use to buff new paint is a polish. If he rattled can it and it came out a little rough then I would suggest a wet sand, polish, and see how it looks, maybe even a second coat then wet sand and polish again. Same with orange peel on a new paint job, wet sand and polish to get it smooth, polish alone will take too long. If he's looking to seal and protect it like a glaze or a wax then i'd wait until the paint has cured properly, usually a few weeks is what i've been told by the body shops.
