Water leak into Interior

Could'nt find a thread on this. I have a water leak into the inside of my truck. Passenger side floor board and in the rear has water puddling....
I re-caulked the rear vent in between the cab and bed... heater core i used sealant... still seems to have some water comming in some how. Any common problem that i dont know about, before i take all the interior out and find it the hard way?
thanks for any help...

Re: Water leak into Interior

Is it an extended cab? My rear side windows leaked BAD on mine. I just took them out, cleaned them up, and put some new weather stripping glue on them to seal them up. Also check around your rear window.

Re: Water leak into Interior

There's a drain plug under your wiper cowl somwhere. If it gets plugged up, it can send water into the cab.

haha ya guess I forgot to add that. That's a pretty common one since leaves and all kinds of just can easily get down in there and plug the drain up very easily.

Re: Water leak into Interior

it seems to be puddling in the back more than the front. other than the window is there any other part that can be leaking. its not comming from under the truck, cuz i had it park over night and before it was dry and now (morning) its wet.. i lifted the back part of the carpet and doesnt seem the be comming from were the raised back part is (under the window).. i guess i gotta wait for some good weather and pull everything out and check that way..... errg.

Re: Water leak into Interior

Take a bottle of water and pour it around your back side windows. That's how I found my leak back there. Once it comes in around that window it usually goes back behind the plastic paneling so It's kinda hard to find unless there's water coming in while you're looking.

Re: Water leak into Interior

I had this happen to me..I had a drunk buddy of mine in the back and I guess he leaned against the back glass to much and popped the seal. Took a lil while to figure it out. I finally noticed one day when i closed my door and my back glass bowed out. I took my time and used some clear RTV silicone sealer from autozone. No more problems ,would never know it was there.

Re: Water leak into Interior

What year is your truck??? If it's a 2nd gen check around the third brake light....sometimes those allow water to leak into the back.

Also confirm that it's not leaking in the front, if it's leaking in the front then you've got a huge list of possible leak areas to check.

I had a leak in the front driver side that took me close to 6 months to find.....Water leaks suck!

Re: Water leak into Interior

Its a 99, the 3rd brake light is shaved. I pulled the interior and wet the outside and looked like the water was comming in from the back window at the top corner. caulked it. It seemed as though water was in the front passenger side, im thinking that it was traveling from back to front,(i hope) other wise i got a leak in the front as well. What are comman places in the front to leak?

Re: Water leak into Interior

Do a good search of the forum for a complete list of front leak areas....but heres some for the passenger side that i can remember:

-grommet where anntenna comes through the firewall
-A/C drain is plugged and backin up into cab
-wiper cowl drains(on either end of the inner 'trough' are plugged(the passenger side one is difficult to access
-seam seal in the wiper cowl is dried out/broken
-door seals arn't fitting tight along the roof and water is dripping in

Theres more, I just can't think of them all right now.....These truck tend to have issues with water leaks - pretty crappy if you ask me.

Re: Water leak into Interior

ive seen first gens leak at that same spot. The little rubber trim around the glass got old, shrunk some and let water get to the glass/metal where it was suppose to be fully sealed, and let in alot of water.

Re: Water leak into Interior

yeah...that'd be my guess too....you should prolly take it to a windsheild shop and have them look at it. But if you wanna be ghetto maybe pull the rubber out of there(very carefully) and then reseal it with some rtv...then reinstall the rubber over the wet rtv.

Re: Water leak into Interior

A good way to check for a leaking window seal is to use some soapy water on the outside and a compressed air gun on the inside. You will see bubbles as soon as you hit the spot that's leaking with the air nozzle. Easy as pie.

If you pull the moulding out you might have a hard time putting it back in. On that model the molding wraps around the edge of the glass and it is probably atatched its self to the windshield from the urethane. If you really want to seal it, drop the head liner and caulk it from the inside. If you guys are going to be re sealing anything, stay away from the silicone sealents. It will contaminate the bonding surface and if you ever have that glass re and re'd it might cause issues down the road with more leaking. If you want to re seal your self I would suggest using primer less urethane. You can purchase it from any auto glass shop.

Re: Water leak into Interior

its a 2000....i have a good idea where its leaking from....not concerned about that part of the equation.....
just curious as to the best way to clean the carpet and pad....its soaked thru...will the mold smell ever go away? or will i have problems down the road with more mold and nastiness?
i was thinkin id have to pull the carpet and clean with diluted bleach and then rinse and repeat and dry?
do i need any special tools to pull the seats and stuff?

Re: Water leak into Interior

As usual there is a ton of spots it can be coming in from, best thing to do is to search some of the threads around here. Heres a GM service bulletin kickin around in some of those threads that can be quite helpful.....I had a leak coming in from the driver side upper corner(behind the dash) and I've posted a thread about how I finally found and fixed it.

Re: Water leak into Interior

Two weeks after I bought my truck, I was driving in a bad storm. At the top of the passenger side pillar, water suddenly shot out in a stream! Like a bad nose bleed! Holy crap! Turns out the seal around the windshield was bad. Dealership left it in the sprinklers all day to make sure they fixed it right. Crazy story I thought I'd share.

Re: Water leak into Interior

My Xtreme had a leak. We figured out it was the little "filler" strip that runs along the roof above the ext cab on the passenger side. Just filled it with some clear stuff. You can't even see it.

I would rip the carpet out back where your seeing the puddle and then get inside and have a buddy spray down the outside. You should be able to see where the water is comming from and then trace it to the source.

Re: Water leak into Interior

There are also drains in the door at the bottom. Get on your back and look up at them. If they get plugged water will pool inside your door and leak into the cab.
