Tint Questions

So I just picked up an 85 T/A....It's got some pimpin purple tint thats all peeling and shit so I gotta get rid of it. I figure on the side window I can just peel it off, with the help of a razor blade if necessary. But I am worried about the rear hatch window because it has the defroster lines in it and I don't wanna screw them up. What should I do to get it off????

BTW: wth is with purple tint....Is it just normal black tint thats turned purple, or do some people actually think purple tint is cool.....If it's just turned purple, how can I prevent the black tint in my truck from going purple?

Re: Tint Questions

i didnt have to use anything to pull my tint off but i didnt have it on a whole long time.

it had tint on the back window that was purple and peeling up, it left alot of resiude on the window itself, some goo-gone and a razor blade helped greatly but its a flat window on the 1st gen.

you dont need a razor, the tint should peel off in 1 sheet and just leave residue on the window.

the reason it turns purple and peels, is because its cheap tint, aka walmart tint.

get what you pay for

Re: Tint Questions

If you're going to have it retinted, just have the shop remove it, they'll usually charge like $5.

Re: Tint Questions

The way Tint shops take it off with minimal residue is to use steam, like one of those personal clothes steamer things.

And the thing that turns it purple is not cheap tint, it is the ammonia in, most likely windex, or whatever cleaner they use because they were too cheap to buy ammonia-less window cleaner (sold at walmart)

My friend got his windows tinted at a local shop, paid like 200 for 5%, Mine is the Walmart 5% stuff, his is less than a yr. old, and is purple as it could be, mine on the other hand is black as coal, the only difference is the cleaners used, I use invisible glass brand cleaner, he uses windex...

Re: Tint Questions

Thanks guys...The tint on my truck is expensive stuff, and I use ammonia less cleaner, so I guess I am ok.

The T/A I am not having re-tinted....just don't think it looks good on third gens.

Even if I can get the rear window to peel off without a razor will it peel the defroster lines off with it???.....What can I used to get the goo off that won't hurt the defroster??

Re: Tint Questions

I usually just use acetone. Seems to work pretty good just peel the tint off, rub some acetone on there, let it sit a while to melt the sticky crap, then rub it off. For old tint like that you may have to repeat a few times.

Re: Tint Questions

I will tell you why the tint is purple(has nothing to do with the cleaner you use) Even though you should use amonia free cleaner any ways. The purple color is a good indication that it is a low quality tint that is died to the color. Good quality tint actually is metalized to give it its color. You will also see this purple tint from wal mart bubbling off due to its week glue structure. To remove your back glass tint is going to take a lot of time. First remove the tint and if your lucky most of the glue will come with it. with the remaining left over glue use a solvent on a rag and wipe in one direction. If you scrub it will just smear all over. Do not use a razor blade cause it will take your defrost lines right off. A lot of tinters I have met would not touch a removal of tint job at all, let alone for $5

Why would it suck for me. I am a tinter and I would never touch someone else's hacked up tint job. Especially for 5 measly dollars. I guess I am just not that desperate for the work.

Re: Tint Questions

People at the tint shop I go to use a steamer and rip off as much as possble without it and use the steamer between the tint and the window. Right when they do that it comes off really easy.

I beat you to it! j/p

and twisted, I know that the cheap stuff will turn purple on its own, but if you use ammonia based cleaners it will turn the very best tint purple as a grape! Like I said, My tint is walmart special (I will say though that it is the best walmart offers, supposedely metal based like you said)and I have never used ammonia based crap, and its black still, and my friend who got the best stuff a local tint shop sold is purple now because he always uses windex.

Everyone I knwo that uses windex has purple windows, no matter how good your tint is, never use ammonia based cleaners!

wrong Okay said it before the glass cleaner will not change the color of a true metalized tint. What changes the color of the tint is UV break down. The reason you are not supposed to use ammonia based cleaners is due to the fact that all tint is perferated with tons of tinny holes (not visable with the naked eye) The ammonia in the cleaner can seep through the tint and effect the glue structure. Okay there is also 3 types of tint make ups. Dyed, hybrid (dyed metalized) and strait metalized) I use the later. Most shops do not due to the much higher price. I know tinters that there best product they carry is still dyed cause its cheap there for more profit. I am sure the tint you have is a hybrid style and not true metalized. Regardless if its the best wall mart offers its still not high quality.

Yep you are correct. Ammonia will certainly not change the color of tint, it just affects the adhesive like you said.

Re: Tint Questions

all of these guys are correct many factors have a effect on the tint..wal mart tint doesnt help...what i do for all my tint jobs which im positive aton of other shops do is use a steamer to get the tint to loosen off the glass because of the heat and then slowly as heating and peeling peel back the tint..once the tint is removed take glass cleaner and wet the whole window...then take a pot scrubbing pad to it and that will get all the left over glue off

Re: Tint Questions

Around me tint shops charge 10-20 bucks to remove your old tint, but only if they are installing new tint for you obviously...I had my RX7 redone since the old early 80's tint wasn't purple but was bubbling and peeling off. I called 4 or 5 places locally and they all quoted less than 25 dollars to remove the old tint if they were also installing the new tint.

The place that ended up doing it, used the steam method described above when I asked them how they did it. If you are doing it yourself, what works well once you get most of the tint off or enough you can get some cleaner under it to dissolve the adhesive is 3m Gum and Adhesive cleaner, nasty stuff but works great. Wear a respirator if you are inside the truck doing it!

Re: Tint Questions

spray the inside rear window with a heavy ammonia based cleaner. Take a heavy BLACK trash bag, and cut it to fit the rear window. Press the trash bag up to the tint. The wetness will hold it in place. Park the car in the sun for an hour or so.... back window towards the sun. It should peel off after that.

Results may vary though, it worked for me a few times.

I think I am gunna try that!
I just got the front windows cleaned up....It peeled off ok, but left some nasty glue residue, so I wasted alot of paper towels and laquer thinner removing the glue - looks much nicer now without purple windows though.....Cept I've still got the rear window left

Re: Tint Questions

as far as removing tint from a regular window (i.e. one without defrost lines) why hasn't anyone mentioned just a razor blade and glass cleaner or soap. takes like 5 min. for a regular side glass.

Re: Tint Questions

Well it wasn't sunny enough to try the garbage bag thing, but I did manage to get the rear window de-tinted without wrecking the defroster. Started at 10:30 sunday morning and finished at 2:00 that afternoon. I used a razor blade and carfully peeled around all the defroster lines, then I used windex to soften up the glue left behind and then scrubbed the glue off using laquer thinner - talk about a shitty job.....Now the car is full of tint scraps, lol

Sorry Ty, no pics.

Re: Tint Questions

i am a professional window tinter the steamer wont take off purple tint. it will still leave to glue on there the best thing to do is to peel all the tint off and use steel wool and soapy water to clean the glue. it will take about an hour but you wont ruin your defrost.

only problem with this which I have personaly witnessed is that it will scratch the windows. Not really noticeable until you have the sun light hitting it.

Also a good way to do this is w/ a heat gun stand on the outside of it and have some1 on the inside start in a top corner get it really hot and it will drop have the person on the inside lightly pull the tint and heat it as they move...

I have a vehicle with tint that's been on for 13 years, and another that has tint that as been on for probally 15+ years and neither has any signs of them fading.

In fact none of the tints I've ever had on any vehicles of mine have faded.
