Re: thinkin of buffin my truck
wonderfull tip there.....
Seriously though, a dual action buffer is best, but a rotary one will be fine, just don't push really hard. Just remember, buffers can leave swirls |

Re: thinkin of buffin my truck
The Porter Cable 7424 Better know as the “PC” is idiot proof. Believe me I can be an idiot at times, but even I made my Wife’s 2000 Black Grand Prix shine like a mirror the first time I used it two years ago. I think the only way to damage paint with the PC is to drop the PC on the car itself…… Besides that you are safe!!
The polishing action of the PC “oscillates” instead of “rotating”. You can NOT get a polish to work by hand as you will with the PC. The Sonus DAS Pads are the best ones I’ve used. (I’ve used Lake county and, Meguiars). I use the orange or green pad, depending on the severity of the swirls. With 1Z Paint Polish for deep swirl polishing. Then follow up with the green or blue pad using the same polish. Then I switch to the Black pad and use 1Z Metallic Polish (You dont need metallic paint to use this polish). You can experiment with different pad and polish combinations, you can’t do any damage. PC 7424 With Sonus Pads Polishes How to use the PC 7424 |

Re: thinkin of buffin my truck
well coming from a painter i can give you all the tips you need.
1st and foremost if you have any doubts u must take it to a paint shop and have them do it. A good shop will probably only charge you about 50 bucks. use a standard buffer (makita, snapon) run about 1400 rpm for buffin and 1000 for polishing. use quality products 3m and only 3m. perfect it II and III make the best stuff out now. dont fall for any of the gimmicks u see on trucks tv or any of that other bs ur just wastin time and money. before you buff wetsand with a DA with about 3000grit wetpads(foampads with some grit) and use 1500 grit for deeper scratches) always run your buffer spinning off the edges when you come to the end of a panel. never spin with the direction the pad is moving into the edge. this will cut in faster and ruin the edges. byt the way there is no true buffing with a DA there is waxing with a DA style buffer but they dont put out enuff power to buff. You want to buff a 2 foot by 2 foot square at a time and hit the area 3 times before moving on. the bject of buffing is only to revove the new scratches u put in with sanding, you cant smooth the finish any more than it already is for the most part. when you are buffin you should be gettin the panel hot(friction) but not to hot always keep the buffer moving never stand still. always tape up rubber around glass and things as if u rub compound in them they will look like crap forever. take your time and dont try to force anything to get done or you will screw up something i cant tell you how many buffers and helpers have cost me good money in buying new weatherstrippin or repaints. any questions email me at steventucker1@cox.net i will be glad to help Last edited by lakeratokc : 09-26-2004 at 09:30 PM. |
