taking painted letters off a truck
this is just a general question about how to take painted letters off of a truck. We just bought a used roll-off truck from another company and they have their company name painted on the doors and hood of the truck. I was wondering what kinds of things would take off the name but not mess up the paint of the truck. I heard Easy-Off Oven Cleaner works but i was just seeing if you guys know.......thanks

Re: taking painted letters off a truck
You're probably better off getting that panel painted, cause it will probably look like shit with the paint being two different shades

If it's been painted on then you're gonna have to sand the lettering off and repaint it. If they were vinyl or something then goo gone or something of that sort would work. |

Re: taking painted letters off a truck
If it's paint, and was done by a lettering shop with lettering enamel, you can usually get that off with a razor blade, being really really careful, and wetting down the area alot with soapy water. Instead of scraping the stuff off though, try dragging the blade across the paint like you were shaving it. Then when it's off, you can wetsand the area where the letters were and buff it. If it's vinyl, heat up the letters with a heat gun being careful not to get too hot, then peel the letters off. Any excess glue can be taken off using goo gone, that stuff doesn't work too horribly bad, but if the letters have been on a while you'll be able to see an outline where the top layer of clear has faded slightly. To remedy this, you can wetsand and buff the area with a buffing compound, like 3m perfect it, and then buff the area with some kind of finish restorer compound. This will cut down on being able to see the outline very much, usually, it eliminates the problem. Sometimes you can get buy with buffing and not having to wetsand, and sometimes you need to wetsand it first.
