Sticky Steering wheel

I got a 97 S-10 SS and my steering wheel is sticky. I wondered if anyone else has experienced this situation. I have tried washing it with soap and water, and applying armor all even though I know it isn't recommended because it could be slippery. That didn't even help. It is more sticky when it is more humid outside. It isn't my hands sweating because I can dry them off and the wheel still is sticky. Any suggestions?

Re: Sticky Steering wheel

Sticky as in the touch of the steering wheel itself, I was kind of in a hurry when I typed it and it doesn't mean sticky as in when I turn the wheel- sorry.

Re: Sticky Steering wheel

I've got the same problem in my '98. I tried soap 'n' water, Clorox bleach wipes (no bleach actually in them, just the name), and finished up with Simple Green. Still sticky. My new solution is a $15 genuine imitation leather steering wheel wrap from PepBoys.

Sorry I couldn't help, but maybe TnHombre will stop in and give us a clue....please ?

well it seems like the "top" coating is worn off....this happens over time from cleaning it to harshly and from the heat ....
the only thing you can do is pretty much what you have allready done..... clean it with a good all purpose cleaner and than dress it with a water based dressing......when you clean it watch closely to make sure your not removing a layer.................BUT you may have to remove a layer to get rid of this.......hope this helps. if not yea just get a cover......again this is why you have to be careful when you clean steering wheels because if you remove this top layer than itll be sticky

I tried washing it like I said and you are probably more than right about the top layer being worn off- I then put some armorall on a cloth, wiped it down, then washed it again. It was slippery ( a little) the first day or two then it went away. So did the stickyness. Thanks for the help.

no problimo.... every once in a while just use armor-all on it ......dress the whole wheel than after its dressed use your bare hand and massage the armor-all in with your hand.......this will remove it as well as rub it in...... BUT NOT with a cloth as this will remove it all....your hands have natural oils in it so your hand wont dry it back off
