spots on wheels

ok, so my stepdad does some detailing on the side, so he is doing a full detail on my truck. one problem, he used an acid based tire cleaner on the tires, and some overspray got onto the wheels. he said they look like bad waterspots. he also said he will get them out no matter how long it takes. what is the best way to get these acid spots out? we're gonna try some mothers billet polish.

It depends on how bad they are. Try by hand first with the Mothers stuff, then try with a polishing bit, I don't know how the technical terms are, but when using a polishing bit, I was told, it generates heat which is said to aid in the removal of spots.

My guess with the heat is it opens the pores on the metal? Dunno..sounded right

Adam, I got an idea. How about I get some beer and I watch you polish those wheels to a nice shine. Sounds like a god damn good idea to me.

Tell your stepdad to step away from the acid haha. Actually acid is great for removing really bad water spots (mineral deposits) from wheels, windows & paint. I know of ACS (auto chem systems) that sell a water spot remove that is acid based. The main thing is to not let the product sit on the paint or glass for very long. You need to apply it and spray/wipe it off right away or else you are left in the situation you are in with a nasty spot.

Unfortunately I don't really have any good recommendations other that what has already been said. Find a good metal polish and go to work but I do not know if that will help since most metal polishes simply remove oxidization and surface contaminants.
