Something to clean exhaust with?
The winter has sucked for my exhaust (yes I still have stock exhaust), getting it all dirty and that black shit all over it. Right before winter it was all brand new, shining a nice metallic shine. My question is, is there something I can use to clean it up and make it look nice and shiny?
I know exhausts just get dirty over time but I didn't know if something can get rid of all the shit on it. I've manually scrubed and washed it which has helped a little but its still got that blackish shit. Maybe I should whip out the brillo pad? Thanks. |

Re: Something to clean exhaust with?
I was looking through my dad's building and found some stainless steel cleaner in a spray can. If your truck has stainless exhaust, it works pretty good. Metal Polish always works well but can require a lot of elbow grease. When I had chrome wheels on my prelude, I used this stuff called bleech-white. It was some real potent stuff, but it is not supposed to be used on some applications (not sure of which though). Spend like 10 minutes in the car-care section and you are bound to find something good. If that bleech-white is alright for your application, it has some power. Also, I found some industrial strength wire-wheel cleaner at a backwoods hardware store that worked pretty good. I'm pretty sure that the black stuff is carbon buildup, so the same stuff that works for brake-dust probably will work for the exhaust. Just make sure that it doesn't say "don't use for (your type of metal here)"
A preventative measure is to spray and rinse that kind of stuff in your exhaust a little when you are washing your truck. Following other's statements, polish is definetly the safest and most effective. You just have to put a little work into it. Good luck getting that stuff off! |

Re: Something to clean exhaust with?
if you can find a wholesale auto detail supply shop see if the have, i forget the sceintific name...its either hydroflouric or hydrochloric acid.... alot of detailers use it (watered down of course) on rims... you may be able to find it somewhere else too, but i dunno where
it just happens to work great on exhausts too |

Re: Something to clean exhaust with?
I keep my tips waxed even more than my truck. The best thing I have found for my exhaust tips is the eagle one never dull. It pulls the brownish color off the exits of my tips & takes all of the little tar speckles off too.

Re: Something to clean exhaust with?
an "sos" pad will work. i have been using them for about 10 years now. it also works great for my wifes white letters. i don't think i would use it on stainless though

Re: Something to clean exhaust with?
Ok well I went out and got some Eagle One Never Dull and I'm pretty happy with the results. Sure it didn't get all the crap off my stock but I'd say it got about 90% of it. I've attached an after pic, and unfortunetly no before pic. I don't know if theres a way to get it any cleaner or not?
Also I've attached a pic of my inside rim. Its all shitty and I got some of that simple green degreaser and just sprayed a bunch in there and wiped hard and it really didn't get anything off. I wanted to see if it would work before I took off all my wheels to try but I dunno, I think that pitting isn't going to get any better. Anyone got any ideas? ![]() |

Hrm it sounds like it could mess my shit up being the careless person I am.
Unless its available in something that might be a bit safer to use? |
