soaked carpet from rain

This is not s10 related, but my girl has a civic, and when she got in it this morning to go to work there was a puddle of water from the rain last night on the passenger side in the front. She didnt get to see where it was coming from but later on today she said from under the dash, I checked a few minutes ago and nothing it stopped raining, I guess tomorrow I will just spray the outside with a hose to see if I can find where its leaking.

The puddle eventually just absorbed into the rest of the carpet but its still soaked, what is the best way to get all the water out and clean the carpet, so it will not smell and there wont be any mold or anything

Really, i would recommend to remove the carpet and let it dry outside, you definitely dont want mold or any weird smells.

i think you can also spray it down with some lysol to prevent any mold from growing but the sooner you take it out the better.

If you cannot take it out, suck all you can out with a shop vac, then try and get the side of the carpet loose by the door where you can get air flow under it, and find the most powerfull fan you have. let it air till its dry.
lysol helps as well, spray it on and under the carpet.

Re: soaked carpet from rain

I left the window down in my truck one night during the rain and had a similar problem. I did not take my carpet out though and it doesn't smell. I shop vac'ed like crazy though. I also bought some sort of carpet powder meant for this kind of thing. Basically you just sprinkle it around and it absorbs some moisture and you vacuum that up. Worked pretty well for me although like these guys said if you can get the carpet out pretty easily that would be the safest bet.

Re: soaked carpet from rain

Your best bet, like said before, would be to pull the carpet and let dry. If on only one side, pull the rear seat and the drivers/pasenger seat (whatever side it's on), pull up the door sill trim, kick panel, and whatever else trim is holding the carpet down. You may need to dry the floor pan itself with a rag. Clean the floor pan and make sure you get in all the cracks and nooks/crannie. Set a fan in the car, or turn the heater on to dry the floor. You should pull the padding off and dry. Let the carpet dry as well, then re-attach the padding or purchase new automotive grade padding and install. Pic of half interior flooding repair:

I do a bit of flood jobs and mold remediation jobs.
Here is one that took me a good amount of time. Clogged A/C drain line. Leaked in the car for some time. Carpet and padding started molding and smelling.

I love doing these jobs. Sure it take a long time to do it right, but the pay is top notch.

Re: soaked carpet from rain

It could be the drain from the AC clogged. The same thing happened in my 96' accord. I had to crawl under the car and use my air compressor with the air nozzle on the end and blow it into the hose that the AC condensation came from and when I backed off the nozzle, a TON of a water came pouring out on my face. Those cars are known to get clogged every now and then.

Re: soaked carpet from rain

We found out it was leaking from the top of the windshield, it was replaced this past janurary and it was good all up until now. The place that did it pulled out the windshield pulled the old sealant off and re sealed it, now we are trying to get a new carpet out of them, but they said it was too long
