single stage paint

ok, i need some help. my brother-in-law just inherited a 1988 S-10 for his 16th b-day. his dad bought it new in '88 and had a 'custom' paint job put on it.

its all single stage paint. the stripes are nice and straight, just faded, and yes they are painted on.

Re: single stage paint

well......i never did flat out say that the truck was single stage......i guess i assumed that people would see how the buffing pads turned red and realize it was single stage....or maybe see this sentence:

" i'll grab some pics tommorow of a vette i'm buffing out.......looked the same as the truck although the 'vette is base/clear"

anyway, that thread is for restoring gloss to a faded single stage paint job!

i've got some poorboys SSR2 i'm gonna try on it before he starts driving it. but at least its a good place to start.

Re: single stage paint

A rotary and wool pads are a good start.
I would throw the PB's SSR2 in the trash. I've had better luck polishing with a damn rabbit. (sarcastic) Then you need to figure out if a chemical cleaner will work vs. a cleaner/polish/compound with micro abrasives. Also... you want to start with the least aggressive method and go from there. Who knows how thin the paint is if it was repainted that long ago.

good luck

Re: single stage paint

Poorboys World makes good products. Did the SSR2 work good for you? I am sure it did, they have some good products. Just keep a paint sealer on the truck and then a coat of wax on top of it and it will bring the shine back and keep it shiney for quite a long time until he can get it repainted.

Re: single stage paint

Personally I would go with either www.autoint.com or Poor Boy's has a paint sealer that is great. The Poor Boys stuff is probably what you will want. Lots of other people love it as well. Buy some of that, use it sparingly (light coats) and then put a coat of wax on top. Doing the wax may seem like it's pointless to use the sealer then but it's not. The sealer lasts much longer and the wax just adds an extra coat to make the sealer last even longer.
When you go to do it, do a good pre wash that will strip all the old wax and contaminants that's on the paint off. Then do whatever compounding and swirl remover you need to do and then apply the sealer then wax. Good to start with a fresh clean paint surface instead of too much build up of the old wax, new sealer and then new wax on top again.
