shitty paint....

I tried waxing my truck a few weeks ago, and i first tried a spot on the hood, so when i took the cloth off i was using it was blue!! that shit took some of the paint off! luckily there is no noticeable spot from where i did that. is this due to the shitty paint job, or something else?

Re: shitty paint....

If it's the original paint on an 80's truck, then yes, it'll take it off. I could walk outside ride now, rub a cloth on my Blazer and have the cloth come out with dark gray (my truck's color) powder on it.
I've found that using a buffer works best, it seems to put less pressure on the paint and doesn't rubb off as much. It also spins fast enough that the wax doesn't swirl into the oxidized paint (those of you that have tried to wax dead paint know what I mean:-))

Re: shitty paint....

the only way u gettin to color is because youv gone thru the clear if you have a decent coat of clear on top u wont get color you prob buffed to hard with a buffer or it has been done too much over the years or you have a single stage in any case if your gettin paint on your cloths its time for a new paint job sorry

Re: shitty paint....

On my silver/gray 2-tone '87 Blaz, it appears to be single-stage on the top and base-clear on the side. I don't know why they did it, but no "bad clearcoat" on top, it just went flat over the years and just looks kinda dull. The side, however has a legit clearcoat.

Re: shitty paint....

if ther is two different styles i dont think it was factory, one of the two is probably a repair job i will do some research tomm in the books and see if they were using a single stage at factory. dont take this the wrong way but a lot of cheap paint shops ie maaco use single stages to save money.

Re: shitty paint....

Good point. Now I know GM had some crappy paint there for a while. The paint on my mom's '89 went bad and was repainted under warranty. Same thing on dad's '93. I can't see any signs of a repaint, though, as the paint in the jams and under the upholstry is exactly the same color, just shinier. Also, when I removed my luggage rack, there's no obvious raised line of where the new paint was added. So if it was redone at some point, they did an awesome prep job.
