Ridding truck of cigarette smoke smell

I searched and found only one thread but it didnt seem to address my problem.

I guess ultimate solution would be to quit smoking right? - looking for something quicker rather than long term....

That said, ive shampooed the interior, but the smell comes at ya full blast when you turn on the heat/AC/vents --- what ways do u guys suggest to get this smell outta my ride?

When I bought my truck, the previous owner smoked but the smell wasnt too bad. I used fabreeze on everything even the headliner to get most of the smell out. Funny thing is I didn't smoke at that time so the smell really pissed me off. I started smoking again a year ago, but quit again this past November right when I put my truck away for the winter. I havnt been in it since, so I'm probably going to be trying to get the smell out again. Its a brutal cycle haha.

Clean everything really good. The Nicotine wlill cling to everything including plastic panels, headliner, carpeta and seats. After they are clean, ozium works good. Ive heard this somewhere, but never tried it....you can try it though...Take a new loaf of bread and slice a slit in the plastic longways....let it sit in the truck for a couple of days....supposedly absorbs the odor like a sponge....NOT SURE IF IT WILL WORK OR NOT

Re: Ridding truck of cigarette smoke smell

The best way to get rid of it is to clean your carpet & seats really good once a year. In between that, buy NEUTRA-AIR stick ups. Put one in at a time in a hidden location. I usually stick them to something near the heater blower. They work great, better than anything Ive tried to date. Now for the cleaning. Get a wet dry vac, a scrub brush, a hot bucket of water, & liquid laundry detergent. Pour a small puddle of hot water onto the floorboard. Now pour about a half cap full of laundry soap onto the carpet. Scrub it really good spreading the water with it. Now add more hot water & scrub it. Soak it up with your wet dry vac. Now pour a large puddle of water on the carpet to rinse it, & suck it up really good with a wet dry vac. Now go to the other side & do it. If you have cloth seats you want a softer brush. With those I just have a bucket of hot soapy water that I dip the brush in & scrub (so I dont oversoak the seats). I then use the wet dry to suck out the water. I then dab the seats with a CLEAN towel. Leave your windows open in your garage for it to dry out. I prefer to do mine when its warmer out so it dries really fast, but if your in a warmer climate you can do it any time. Not only will this not mask the odor, it will illiminate it making it smell awesome! It will also rid your carpet of most stains, & it fluffs it back up like new. On your seats, it brings the color back from dust build up that you dont notice on them until they are clean. It really doesnt take to long to do at all. BUT, take your time & do it thoroughly & you will freak out at how great this turns out!! Good luck
P.S. - I am a smoker and everyone gets in my cars & compliments it on how good it smells. Though its about due for a cleaning. Also, the best way to remove smoke film from windows is at a gas station. Use a squeegie on the inside windows. I have done this for many many years. It wont smear it around. It should remove all of it in one swipe. Just go to the stations that keep decent cleaner in them. Wont harm tint or anything else & will save you time & headache. Just do that before you wipe down & vacuum your interior.

Re: Ridding truck of cigarette smoke smell

Clean it out as best you can, shampoo the rugs, seats, headliner. Use a carpet extractor like the Bissell Little Green or a rental carpet shampooer (remove the seats to make it easy.. Spray A/C vent deoderizer they sell at auto supply stores, it works well for removing smells in the heating & a/c system. Then use Fabreeze or Meguiars Odor Eliminator and spray everything down really well.

Then there are two approaches used by the pros, a ozone generator (not the kind you use in a house, the super strong kind) or a can of commercial deoderizer that you set off in your car like a bug bomb. Here's a link that sells to detailers, they also have a good strong ozone generator -

Re: Ridding truck of cigarette smoke smell

well on my first gen, i just cleaned the whole interior with castrol super clean. ya can see the yellow shit run off the dash after you spray it on. that took care of the surface stuff.

the vents i couldnt really do much about, i just let it take its natural course. the vents lost most of the smell since last april when i baught the truck.

Re: Ridding truck of cigarette smoke smell

i smoked out my truck who knows how many times after a week of it smelling i used some random carpet cleaner all on the carpet...seats...headliner and the lil piece of fabric on the door panels it cleared out the smell real good i threw in a few air fresheners for good measure...i dunno about febreeze i sprayed that and it just kinda mixed in with the smoke smell so in the morning it was kinda worse...but i think it was just the kind of febreeze i used.

Re: Ridding truck of cigarette smoke smell

very fast way to cover the smell, and then just clean everything, Do all the vinyl with window cleaner and a towel. Ull c all the yellow coming onto the towel. But get some dryer sheets and under your seats you will see springs. Put them hanging up there and turn on the ground heat in your truck, It will keep sending the smell around everytime ur heat is on.

Re: Ridding truck of cigarette smoke smell

Before the days of Febreeze we used hospital disinfectant on a truck we bought. Sure, it smelled like a hospital for a few days but after that there was no smell, good or bad. Also the great secret to gas station glass cleaner is windshield washer fluid. It's like .88 cents a gallon. It's no better than anything else, it's the squeegy thats making the differance.

Hey man, my bro-n-laws dad always let a cup of vinegar sit in the truck overnight. It's supposed to suck up all the smell.

Re: Ridding truck of cigarette smoke smell

clean your vehicle out and stop smoking in your truck period..

I believe there is a spray foam thing that sprays into your vents that dissolves killing the smell from smoking, you could blast out all the vents with a can of compressed air..to get out all the stink that should work.

Re: Ridding truck of cigarette smoke smell

people who smoke in their car should be shot. It not only causes the smell (that you never truly get out). It affects resale value of the vehicle as well. When you sell a car one of the questions is "are you a smoker". They can tell. Quit smoking in your truck.....if you need a cigarette that bad, stop somewhere and light up outside.

Yeah, I have some friends that smoke, and it's a standard rule, you do not smoke in my truck. If they need a smoke that bad, I will pull over so they can smoke outside.

My friend was working on this old guy's brand new SSR. The guy was like "I really love this truck! I wouldnt trade it for anything!" I felt like asking him if he loves the truck so much why is he ruining the interior with his gay cigarettes. Its a good thing he wont trade it for anything, because its crap now

Re: Ridding truck of cigarette smoke smell

Well I agree you shouldn't smoke in your car. I think you shouldn't really smoke at all but that's just me. I don't smoke. But you know you can't control what other people do and if you buy a car that's been smoked in you can't really do much about that except try to get the smell out. And once you do that then all that are left are the freakin burns. I hate all the cigarette burns in the seats and floorboard.

Re: Ridding truck of cigarette smoke smell

since your user name is zrduece, im going to assume you have at least a 94+ truck. i'd take the dash apart as much as possible (in 98+ you can take off the peice that goes around everything from your stereo to the far left of the dash with ease). take all that out, and soak and wash everything. put some armor all or something on the back before you put it back together. then the smoke smell will be out, and a cleaner kind of smell will be there till it wears off. either way, a true washing of all the plastics is just as important as the fabrics.

Re: Ridding truck of cigarette smoke smell

If you want a quick fix for it, just go to a bong shop or some place that sells inscense and buy you a couple, i usually get like 10 of them for a dollar. Just burn on in your truck... not while you are driving of course. Just light one in there and leave the windows cracked a little bit. It won't completely get rid of it, but it will mask it REAL good, and it last for a good while.

And for everyone who is bitching about people smoking in their vechiles. It's their vechiles, let them do what they please. They don't bitch at your for drinking or eating in your vechile. Besides there is hardly any place in public you can smoke anymore. But anyways I am ranting... Just try the incense man

No cigarette burns here, im extremely careful about that. I mean seriously, how much can some lingering smoke smell bring the value down...were not talking about an exotic sports car or anything. And if its really that big a deal to someone, im sure you can have an auto detail shop use one of those ozone generators.

You would be surprised. Car dealerships use that as a main point in selling used cars. "It was owned by a non-smoker." Some people will turn down a very nice car just because of that. And its not "some lingering smoke". Its a smell that permiates every piece in the car and will never come out, without replacing the whole interior.

Re: Ridding truck of cigarette smoke smell

Im sad to say Im a smoker, its a bitch of a habit. Ive been quiting for the past 10 years. if ya smoke you know were im coming from. If you havent smoked you dont have any inclination of what its like. its the hardest addiction you can ever try to quit. its worse than any mind altering addiction. anyways. I used to smoke in my jeep. the windows were nasty the headliner was ruined, not to mention everything was yellow inside and it was supposed to be a gray interior, to put it simply the interior was ruined. I traded the jeep off for a very nice s10 blazer. even though i smoke i have a rule. NO SMOKING IN MY TRUCK! I have friends that smoke and they respect my wishes. they know i smoke and they dont even try to smoke in my truck. These are good friends. soo if youve got a truck thats been smoked in and it bothers you my best advice is to trade it in on one thats not been smoked in. I know ill never buy a vehicle again that has been smoked in, thats for sure.

Re: Ridding truck of cigarette smoke smell

A guy I hired as a porter at the dealership SWEARS by this one: buy a small bag of charcoal (NOT the self starting kind) and put it in the back seat. Charcoal is used in many applications to absorb scent. They even make hunting clothes now that are lined with charcoal.

I've also heard about the pool of water and soap directly on the carpeting but I've always worried about a bigger, unseen problem......mold, mildew, RUST!!!!!.

Touche But - every car a dealer sells is/was owned by a "Non-Smoker"

I guess for non smokers the smell can be quite disgusting, i know it was for me when i didnt smoke, but i could give a crap about my passengers. If they mind me smoking i'll slow it to 30mph and they can hop out whenever they like - I just wanna get rid of the smell enough so that it doesnt bother me.

Re: Ridding truck of cigarette smoke smell

i just bought new carpet, most of the lasting smell was gone. IF i ever do smoke, (which was two cigs, in a week but in the course of an hour. I ride with the windows down and the cig outside of the truck at a light, or slow speed. I always try to smoke when i stop so i dont in the truck. and its worked so far. o and btw its so much easier to rid the truck of the smell... when it was never there.

Charcoal is a great way to absorb smells!

When i bought my truck i said i wouldn't smoke anything in it...well that lasted about a month. after that i just used dryer sheets and febreeze if it was real bad. also, vanilla scented air freshners are great at making the smell, however the are kinda girly for your truck to smell like vanilla, didn't bother me, the chicks loved it. lol also, don't leave butts in the ashtry, they smell 10x worse than the smoke.

Re: Ridding truck of cigarette smoke smell

Well I smoke. Not much, but you'd know it. I took a bottle and filled it up with some vinegar, Pine Sol
and hot water. Took a scrubbing pad like you use to clean dishes, went and scrubbed down all
the plastic and metal in the cab Came out smelling purty. I'll get some Resolve carpet cleaner and
use our rug steamer to do the seats and the carpet. That Resolve cleaner pulls up spot stains
effectively.

It is a nasty habit, and I'm close to being done with it. Costs too much and I smell like stinkin tar.

Re: Ridding truck of cigarette smoke smell

Why not rent an ozone generator, it will remove the problem, not cover it up.
To start, try spraying professional grade (scented) Lysol in the HVAC intake.
It will help kill the bacteria.

The dryer sheets actually absorb the odor, not cover it up. You only smell them for the first couple days. They are good for about a year or so.

Some odors are so strong the dryer sheets will not touch it.
To actually get rid of bacteria causing odors, you have to kill the bacteria.
Ozone will get into every "nook & cranny" including in the vents.

However, if the sheets are working for you and you are happy with the results..., by all meand keep using them..., they cost a lot less to!!
