Removing bugs and tar?
Title says it. Whats the best stuff I can use, which is NON abrasive? I used some rubbing compound, and man did that haze the paint up, even after a wax!
How about on plastic? |

Didnt have too much luck with that, especially the tar spots. Anything that is a little stronger?

Re: Removing bugs and tar?
secondly, if your bugs are not "coming off" its probably bug etching that you have there. what happens is this: say your driving down the road......... SPLATT ![]() a bug hits your hood/paint well that bug just exploded and now theres bug GUTS on your paint well, bug guts , like ANY guts have ACID in them and that acid will eat thru your clear and paint and leave a "splattered bug" look to it (moral of this story is to remove bugs ASAP) sooooooo get pics of your "bugs" and ill tell you if they will come off or not. Re: Removing bugs and tar?
Allright, thanks for the tips s10 user. I guess any polish will do. Luckily the areas that I used the compound on are pretty well hidden (IE not directly on top of the hood). Also had to remove A LOT of pine sap, because I am also using my S10 as a work truck to haul all sorts of fun things that destroy all that time spent on detailing, very quickly. Next is to rhino coat the bed, and cap the sides!

Re: Removing bugs and tar?
FYI:
the difference between a WAX and a POLISH is : wax is a protectant. polish is a cleaner. so make sure the bottle says "polish" also try rubbing alcohol on tree sap. removes it almost immediately |

Re: Removing bugs and tar?
Allright, thanks. I kind of figured that, considering carnuba wax really isnt abrasive.

Re: Removing bugs and tar?
use a fabric softener sheet (the ones you put in the dryer) to take off bugs. just wet it a little and it takes bugs off surprisingly easy

Re: Removing bugs and tar?
Not all polishes are cleaners. There are cleaner polishes out there, but most polishes remove surface imperfections
![]() The way I get rid of bugs is a quick pre-soak with Simple Green diluted 8:1 with water, then I hit them again with a bug mitt LIGHTLY (the netting can marr your clear very easy), rinse and usually they come off. This method works for tar but I usually use lacquer thinner for any road tar. Adding a glaze to your rocker panels after each wash can also help keep tar from sticking to the paint |

Re: Removing bugs and tar?
Simple green I do have. Maybe Ill give that a try on some of the areas. Havent taken a look at my auto store to see if they carry anything that is specifically made for bugs and tar.
Im not that particular to use a clay bar. Thats too much work for a truck that I use at work. Ends up being a dusty muddy mess in a week anyway. ![]() |

Re: Removing bugs and tar?
WD-40 works well at getting bubble gum off too.
I have a few strange spots that look like this: Looks like the clear coat is a little cracked or something: Then there are the ones that look like this. |

Re: Removing bugs and tar?
3m adhesive remover i used to work @ a dealership and that was all we used to take tar and bugs off when scrubbing wouldn't. For tar let it sit and spray it on heavy and watch it run the spray it again the wash w/soapy rag repeat till all tar and bugs are gone

Re: Removing bugs and tar?
Figured a good way to remove the bugs, well the really bad spots. 3M polishing compound does wonders. Make sure to use a 3 cut though. Any more than that and you will mess that clear coat up.
As for goo gone, yes that works as well. HOWEVER do NOT get that near any plastics. It will melt them within seconds. I made that mistake when cleaning my 3rd brake light. |
