powder coating?

I did not know where to put this so if this is a bad place please move it for me. thanks

Does anyone know how to do powder coating?

I was looking around on ebay and seen a few differnt systems, but all of them include a little box im guessing that it is a compressor?

Their only about $70 for a complete outfit witch I dont thank is to bad , but Im all ready set up to do automotive painting and have a large 80gal compressor and a and a $40 presure regulator that is adjustable from 0-180 PSI

I was wondering if I could get a powder coating gun and use my compressor, or even if I could use like a mini gravity feed detel gun?

also I know you have to bake it, and can I use just a normal oven for this or does it need to get to real high temp?

thanks

Re: powder coating?

i just took my parts (which was a dirtbike frame) to a local pplace to have them done. it's not that expensive if they have the color in stock that you want. it only cost me 80 bucks tol have an entire mx bike's frame powdercoated gloss black and it turned out wayyyyyyyyy better than i expected.

Re: powder coating?

sort of, they do give it some sort of charge to keep the plastic particles attatched while it bakes as i understand it

If you look in my gallery I had my 6 link done in pewter with my shocks chromed came out to around 400 because I wanted it back in 2 days chroming can be pretty pricey especially in that period of time.

The box is a cover to separate out the necessary wires. One you clip to the item another is the button that gives the item a charge so when you spray the powder it sticks to the item. One runs to the gun to charge the powder.
You can use your compressor and regulator setup, pressure is extremely low ( I have the eastwood setup and run it less than 10psi)
You would not be able to use a paint gun, the gun attached to the box has a metal rod through it which holds a charge.
You will need an electric oven (220v) 400 for 10 minutes will do most items. Remember you limit the size of an item you can do by how big the oven is. I have seen a couple of shops that have welded two similiar ovens together to get more space.
Get one of the kits from eastwood. Then start experimenting. Had mine for a few years now and love it. They came out with a anti corrosion primer a little while back that works great on used bag parts (links cups etc.)
If you have any more questions pm me.

Re: powder coating?

Famous93 is right, it's the power supply, to give you the charge. Habor freight also sell a kit for around $80 on sale for less than $50 some times. They also have an oven normally $400, but was on sale the other week for $300. their ovev was about 18" X 18" X 18" inside. The oven is going to be the expensive part of doing it yourself. The guy, that I just had do some coating for me has about a 2' X 2' X6' oven, something that size costs between 3 and 4 grand, but you can do a rear end housing in it. Prep is the most important part of powder coating. Glass bead everything you can and make sure it's grease free.

Re: powder coating?

how much does powder coating of a complete frame and suspension cost? I was considering having it done to my truck while getting it stock floor body dropped.

Re: powder coating?

Complete frame? ALOT. You have to take EVERYTHING off the frame and find somewhere that has a big enough facility to do that. Why not paint the frame and powdercoat everything else?

Re: powder coating?

i think it would be cheaper, than you would expect. I agree you'll have to find a shop, with a big enough oven to bake it. But race car frames are done all the time. So there is places with big enough ovens. The guy I use can only do a 2' X 2' X 6'. This is big enough to do a rear end housing, but not a complete frame.
