Porter Cable 7424

My dad just bought me a PC 7424 and the Sonus Polisher kit for a graduation present because he knows I spend a lot of time detailing my truck....figured I'd ask if Anyone had opinions, reviews, tips on either the PC or the sonus kit.

Re: Porter Cable 7424

You're doing great, the PC 7424 or 7336 is a good buffer for a beginner and the sonus pads are as good as any other foam pads. The important thing is to figure out which pads and product to use for the condition of your paint finish. You want to use the mildest product that will do the job. For my PC I use Meguiars commercial products (stay away from their consumer polishes, not that good). I use both #80 speed glaze or #83 DACP. The #80 is pretty mild and the #83 is more aggresive. These are for removing defects like swirls in the finish. After that I use the PC to put wax on and then I wipe it off by hand after it dries. Before buffing, make sure the paint is very clean, wash it really well and use clay to remove any surface contaminants. The best websites for detailing instructions are autopia.org or meguiarsonline.com

Basically, to use the PC, put a circle of product on the pad, press the pad in a few spots in about a 2' square to spread the product quickly and hold it flat against the paint and turn it on (never use turn it on without the pad against the car and never lift it off until the motor has stopped or the pad may go flying). Run the PC at 5 for polishing and 3 for waxing. Use slow back and forth motion, and overlap each stroke until the polish seems to dissapear and then wipe off the excess with an mf towel before it dries. Just do a 2' area at a time. Never polish until the product dries or you will have a mess.

Good quick overview. Sonus Pads I believe are made by Lake Country so they should be good!

FYI, Megs #83 is about the same as Poorboy's SSR 2.5 but without as much hazzing. I always follow 2.5 with SSR 1 or Poorboys Pro Polish, but you could go right to sealant/wax.

Also, don't be afraid of speed #6.

Re: Porter Cable 7424

Who makes the best SMR? etc...everyone list their personal favorites for use with a PC and what brand pad/type you use.

I just bought the DF "cord sock" for $10 so no accidents can happen...

Re: Porter Cable 7424

Poorboy's Super Swirl Remover 2.5 (and the rest of the line) with Lake Country 6.5" Cutting Pad. It doesn't get any better. Megs #83 DACP isnt bad either.

Re: Porter Cable 7424

The 6.5" Sonus pads are good. I also have the 4" spot kit and it is very nice to have around when you need them. I've used #83 and SSR2.5, both work very well but the Poorboy's works better in the sun. And like Derek said, don't be afraid of speed 6!

Re: Porter Cable 7424

The Einszett Waxpolish Soft is incredible!!

3M would be next in line.
Both company's are ISO certified, so you know the quality and consistancy is there

Re: Porter Cable 7424

I haven't tried the waxpolish soft yet but I've used alot of Paint Polish (green tin) and the Metallic Polish Wax (red tin) and they are great products, highly recommend the 1Z line.
