Polishing ZQ8's

I've got a spare set of older style ZQ8's that I'd like to polish. But I don't want to disturb the charcoal painted part. Is it possible to wet-sand off the clear coat and polish the aluminum part, then re-clear coat without messing up the painted areas?? I know I've seen some done, how did you guys do it?(post pics of those that have done it)
