polishing older zq8s?

anyone done this ive seen the newer ones and they look pretty good. my rims are like permanently stained with brake fluid or oil even powerwashing cant get it off. so far all thats worked is DX330 and a steamer. im pretty sure the clearcoar is going on them and they are off all winter so i have some time to do it. can i sand off the clear and get some of the pocks and texture out of em and then re clear em? would that make em shiny again?

Re: polishing older zq8s?

ok i started really cleaning em a while ago and even the dx and steam isnt getting part of it off. and the more i cleaned the i uncovered little pocks in the clear so im figuring im going to have to sand these anyway. so i take some lacquer thinner and get some of the major stains off, of course noticing the clear is getting messed up. now wat do i sand the rims with to get the pocks marks out? and wat can i use to buff em?

Use this to buff them

Have you ever tried using greased lightning with bleach to clean the grease off the rims?

If you are going to sand make sure its wet sanding and a very fine grit around 16-1800 range or you will be taking them to a shop.

Also try a scrub brush and hot soapy water?

Let the stuff dwell, give it time to work, I had this problem with all my older cargs, its jsut bearing grease from the dust caps.

Re: polishing older zq8s?

i used a 300 degree steamer, i figured it would work better than soap.

Zq8's? i assume you are talking about wheels, no never did it to a stock wheel but have with many aftermarket racing wheels, aluminum clear coated and painted alike.

And have been a detailer for years on high end automobiles.

Steam wont remove grease that is that think such as bearing grease without a chemical companion.

Re: polishing older zq8s?

Have you tried Airplane paint stripper ? It is VERY aggressive. You can pick it up at a
local autoparts store, but if you do so, try it on the back of the rim first. As mentioned,
it is VERY aggressive, but will take almost any finish off to the bare metal
without having to sand etc..

I was looking for a set when i had the camino, might look good on a 4x4 with some BFG all terrains on it.
