Polished some items under hood...

i was bored today like usual. and i killed an hour doing a little polishing under the hood. i am going to go back over it all and do ALOT more work on the computer thing so it shines.

all i used was blue magic with a terry cloth. then when i was all done. i did one last clean wipe down with a polishing cloth.

before

after

like i said, its only an hours time for all that, so it can def. be better!

i LOVE blue magic, that stuff is the SHIT!

Looks awesome for an hours worth of work, alot better than mine when i first started.

Hey Chris, here is a tip on polishing the computer. you probably already know this but....
  1. Wet sand with 600-800 grit
  2. Wet sand with 1500 grit
  3. then polish with blue magic with a Dremel tool with a felt polishing wheel and this helps to get in the corners . you should be able to get these at walmart as a kit.
  4. apply polish to the wheel, and the surface you are polishing.
  5. polish with dremel
  6. wipe down and repeat step 4 and 5.
I tried doing it by hand but it takes forever.

but yeah it turns out like a mirror

yes, that stuff rocks! and yeah i was surprised how well it shined up for so little time. i think i got some of those attatchments for my dremel. ill see what sand paper i have, and buy what i need and have at it! im gonna do the same with my mass air flow. and i think there is 1 or 2 other things that can be polished. might as well do everything i can.

Re: Polished some items under hood...

well that other stuff is liquid (never used it though) and the stuff i use is a cream so for me its easier to spread on a polishing tip or a part.

Re: Polished some items under hood...

It will work on anything aluminum or that can be polished. The Edelbrock intake will need to be sanded smooth before polishing.

Re: Polished some items under hood...

ok i got started today, it looks better than when i started, but i have some corrosion i guess on the PCM and a little on the ABS module. I'm guessing the best way to get this off is gonna be to wet sand it with some really fine paper then polish?
I got my ABS fairly shiny, my AC lines are fairly shiny, and my PCM in one spot is pretty shiny, and my EVAP canister i hit the top real quick, it looks like its gonna shine up pretty well. I'm using Mothers and my dremel and a terry cloth(wash rag haha oops), I need to get a terry cloth and a polishing cloth. Any other ideas to make it go a little quicker or is patience a virtue here? lol

Re: Polished some items under hood...

yeah, depending how worn down the metal is is how much your going to be sitting there.

mother's works fine, i used it before but on the A/C condenser (evap, accumulator, whatever you call it) you do not need to wetsand it, the surface is fairly smooth. on the ECU and ABS module you need to wetsand with 800 grit, then 1500 grit, then polish. dont forget to apply some polishing cream on the dremel wheel every now and then, also it wont hurt to spread some on the part your polishing with your finger (light coat). after awhile you have a lot of black residue, just wipe it off and repeat.

pretty much it took me awhile to get mine where it is now, its not going to shine like a mirror after the first pass with the dremel. but the better you wetsand now, the less work for you later.

also if you have the 2.2 you have the option to polish the T-stat housing

Re: Polished some items under hood...

cool, i was thinking about hitting it with a wire brush to get the majority of it off, then sand it and polish
for the 1.5 hours i spent on it today the stuff doesnt look to bad, but i have more to do, i want it to shine
one more thing, with the dremel u get splatter all over crap, how do u get all that shit off?

wire brush? ehh, if its really course then i wouldnt even dare using it, even if its a fine bristle brush i wouldnt really use it. you dont want to risk putting scratches into the metal then you have a ton of wetsanding to do to get them all out.

just get some sandpaper, a spray bottle, and a Popsicle stick (to wrap the sandpaper around to help with tight spots)

i put wayyy more than 1.5 hours into mine, maybe like 8 hours, i lost count really, but not all at once. i would polish it and i would re-polish it a day or two later.

also with the dremel i get some splatter but if you keep the coat on the dremel light you wont get much. it would be a good idea to keep the speed down on the dremel on the first initial pass, then you can put the speed up for the final pass (not final but before you wipe everything down to start over) what i would suggest is to get an old rag or towel and lay it around the work area. but to get it off DAWN dish soap works well, or just a wet paper towel with dawn dish soap.

I really need to do a how-to with lots of pics and maybe a video of the process.
