Paint scratches in bed, HOW TO FIX???

I have just removed a drop in bed liner and it left behind mad scratches and spots where it actually rubbed paint off. It is white in color and I was wondering what is the best way to re-pait these spost. I would say that there a about 20-30 dime size rub off spots. Should I just get a paint pen, or tough up paint and brush it on over the spots??? Thanks!!

I need to do the same sort of thing. I'm going to get some GM color matched spray paint to do my touch ups. It's pretty inexpensive and will probably get the best results without repainting the whole thing. Remember to primer anything that may be rubbed through to bare metal. Also try to buff out the minor scratches, it may save you alot of time. Good luck!

Why not just get a spray in bed liner? No more scratches or worries.

You could try krylon fusion. It is made to bond to plastic surfaces so it should look alright. I don't know how tough it is though. I think it is weather resistant as well.

I had major scratches in the bed of my 2000 X after hauling the old step bumper and spare that were removed when I did the exhaust, but I just had a BedRug put in......much cleaner, and showier i think......

Re: Paint scratches in bed, HOW TO FIX???

I would still go with a spray in. Do it in white. It will protect it & never look like it has been scratched. I dont know much about these type but Checkmate sells a carpet kit for $125-150?
You can also order POR15 in colors. Brush it on & the lines fade as it dries & it will look sprayed on. Plus you wont chip or scratch it. My bro uses it on his frames and whatnot for his muscle car restorations

Re: Paint scratches in bed, HOW TO FIX???

You can put all the bed rugs, liners, spray ins or anything else you want to, but you said you had spots of bare metal showing, bare metal over time will rust, then rust under your paint, then crack off, then be a bigger paint crack. They're all sorts of way you can fix them, but I fixed a few bare metal spots on my bed that was left from a speaker box doing this. I sanded down the metal spots with a Dual Action Sander, you can hand sand to just will take longer, using 180 grit sandpaper, then just using the spray can primer you can buy at auto zone I primed all the spots I sanded with 180. Then I wet sanded the primer and the area about an inch around the primer with 400 grit sandpaper, you may have to repaint the prime/sand step a few times until you're satisfied but usually on beds once does the trick. I then wet sanded around the primed area all the way around about 3 inches with about 1200 grit paper. Paint the primed area, I used the spray can stuff for everything, and then clearcoat the painted area. Just clearcoat the painted area and not the whole area you wet-sanded. Once the clear's dry enough wet sand just the clear area with about 1200 and then buff the whole area you wet sanded with some buffing compound preferably using a buffer over hand buffing. This worked for me. And also if you ever wanted to get a spray in liner, just get a gallon of the roll in liner. Works just as good and would be alot less.

Re: Paint scratches in bed, HOW TO FIX???

I put this in my 03 X, http://www.herculiner.com/
it took a few hours but you can’t tell the difference between my $80 liner and my buddies $400 liner. I would recommend it to anyone. Good luck opening the can .

Re: Paint scratches in bed, HOW TO FIX???

Not true big bass. If you use POR15 over it, nothing can get to it. It is super tough too. I hit my brothers frame with a hammer after he did it & it didnt do anything to it. Tough stuff, that is why it is poplular for frames, engines, etc by auto restorers. Anyway, in the bed POR15 or a spray liner would seal out anything preventing anything that would cause rust. It would have to come from the underside & that is not where he is having his problem. JMO

Re: Paint scratches in bed, HOW TO FIX???

Don't let water get into where there is no paint. That solves the rust dilemma. A cheap way to fix it is just spray some paint over it. It probably won't look as good, but if money is the biggest issue, it will keep it from rusting. I just got my truck in November and have managed to scratch the heck out of my bed (carrying 8 kegs in the bed will do that!) I plan on getting a spray-in liner when I get the money, but that may be a while. It takes a good while for rust to start cause I have had the scratches for about 3 months and have no rust yet. I make sure to wash my truck immediately after salt gets in it, cause it is detrimental to bare metal. Anyways, If you are getting a new liner later, you won't have to worry about the looks of the bed except for the time it takes to get the money up. Fpr a couple of months, a little wax will keep it from rusting. Otherwise, spray-paint over the scratches. If you are getting one of the rhino liners, they have to sand it off anyways.
