paint peeling on bottom of truck??

hey guys just wondering if anybody has any ideas about stopping or trying to slow down the paint chipping off the very bottom of the S-10 like under where you can't really see? My S-10 is a 99 and in NY is shitty in winter and the truck stays dirty (salt and crap) most of the winter and it has taken its toll. Its starting to come off on the back fender and basically there are little rust spots underneath that you can only see when working under the truck (thats how I first noticed them). Now, I understand everything eventually rusts and after 5 years I can't complain but the rest of my paint is great and shinny like a mirror but it's really bugging me even though you can't see the spots unless you get down and look up underneath. I wax my truck all the time but I never really get up under there to wax seeing you gotta be like lying on the ground to see it, and its going to obviously spread as I wash it and go over it little by little more paint will come off. Is this easy to fix and stop from spreading if I had a body shop sand down the area and repaint? Or am I asking for trouble and they would have to paint the whole panel to make the color even? I was just wondering what you other guys do in the east and up north (besides store your truck all winter lol) to try to keep this at bay. Man it sucks when then rest of your truck looks flawless and you got 20's but then the rust is creeping...any ideas?

Re: paint peeling on bottom of truck??

Well it honestly depends on how severe the rust is. Most likely you only have surface rust which honestly isn't too bad. I would however suggest you do something about it, especially since you care so much. The rust can only be stopped by coating it/removing it. You should also hence, that this IS the bottom of your truck and you WILL keep running into little problems like this for the rest of it's daily driver routine.

Don't panic tho, you can do a few things:
1. Sand the rusted area untill all the rust is gone, and the area is smooth to touch. Spray with desired color, and coat with layer of clear coat.
2. Mask off the bottom of your truck, so that the visible underside of the body can be sanded and not noticed unless you are underneath the truck. Sand till smooth, getting rid of all rust, clean, and coat area with undercoating. This will be more durable, last you for years, and not crack and chip like normal paint will. This should effectively deter any stones or pebbles that hit the underside of the body that would normally chip. If you prefer a glossy finish, this is not for you.

Hey thanks alot for the advice. It makes me feel better knowing I can somewhat stop it. Like I said you can't see it now but soon it will start creeping up the side of the truck after this winter. You're right though its only surface rust and actually seems that the paint is bubbling/chipping more then rust. Like you can see some bare metal which I know isn't good and will rust unless I do something about it. The undercoating is a really good idea. If you can't really see that part of the truck why not blast it with some stronger paint so it will not reach the part that can be seen. Great ideas thanks man!

I have no idea about the rust coverage but I would think 75K is kinda high. I mean in this area or any "seasonal" place I would think that most cars have rust after 5-6 years and I would think everybody would be going back to the dealer. I just can't see it being that high in terms of miles if there is some sort of rust protection. I might call and see what they say. Can't hurt I guess...

Re: paint peeling on bottom of truck??

There is also a clear vinyl coating that is available for the underside of vehicles. Chevy puts a small patch of it behind the wheel wells. I've seen large pieces of it at Wheel & Tire Centers for use of the leading edges of cars (Hoods, Fenders, etc). It looks to be a great rock/chip protector.

wow, no shit? I have never heard of that but I'll have to check it out. I think that would work good as long as i sand it down and stop the rust, then they could put that coating over it. Can you do it yourself or should you have a tire or bodyshop place do it?
