Paint after pulling racing stripes???

Im looking to purchase an 01 Xtreme to replace my 03 that was totaled. The 01 that I'm looking at is black with the siliver racing stripes. My question is, If I decide to remove the racing stripes, how bad will the paint be underneath...do you think that it will be badly discolored underneath, or should it be ok? If it is discolored, is it something that could be buffed out, or no?

I didnt know if I should put this thread in this topic, or paint and body??

Re: Paint after pulling racing stripes???

A buddy of mine had the silver racing stripes on his black s-10 and when he pulled his off, the paint that was covered by the stripes was nice and bright while the rest was faded. He is just having the whole truck repainted.

Re: Paint after pulling racing stripes???

The paint under the strips SHOULD be in great shape. The issue will be if the rest of the paint on the truck. If it is in decent shape then a good polishing with an abrasive polish should do wonders. It all depends on how the paint on the rest of the vehicle is.

On my '99 Xtreme, I just took off the emblems on the doors this past summer. Thats 5 years with them being on there. The paint under the emblems once I removed all the glue was in mint shape. I clay bar'd, polished than waxed and you cannot tell at all where the emblems were.

Re: Paint after pulling racing stripes???

Right.....I would assume that the paint should be mint under the stripes seeing that the paint would be protected...but I was worried about it mis-matching the rest of the truck...... especially since they've been on there probably 4-5 years now, and its in direct sunlight. My biggest worry is pulling them off, and there is no way to get the paint under the stripes to match the rest of the truck without gettting the truck resprayed.

Ya its a tough situtation. One idea is to pull the strips off the roof then clay bar it, polish and wax and see how it looks. If its good then do the rest, if not go to a graphics shop and get new ones put on the roof. That way you arnt totally screwed and shouldnt be that expensive.

Well I'm fairly confident that you will have no problem getting the paint to blend if you pull your stripes. (King_nothn had a good idea starting with the roof as a test area.) Use a heat gun to warm the vinyl, start at a corner and slowly pull up while applying even heat across the stripe. You will be left with glue residue that will clean up nicely with a bodyshop "wax and grease" remover. I highly recommend you get something made by PPG because it won't hurt your paint but will do wonders on the goo. Since your job will be so big this purchase will be worth it instead of trying an off the shelf product like Goo-Gone.
Once the area is completely clean, wash down the whole truck with soap and water then your ready to clay followed by the polishing process. Again for a job like this I wouldn't use a cheap polisher, or cheap products to get the results you want with ease. Get yourself a Porter Cable 7336 polisher and some Poorboys 2.5 SSR (abrasive polish & swirl remover) and you will be well on your way to a beautiful finish. I don't know where you are located but if your anywhere near Windsor Ontario, I could give you a hand.

This is a fairly big job considering all the steps, so make your life easier and get some quality products to do the job. I think that is a key element here.

Re: Paint after pulling racing stripes???

Thanks for the input guys, I think I'll take Kings idea and pull the stripes off the top of the cab. I actually do vinyl work on the side and own a vinyl cutter, so to redo the stripes wont be a problem...I just didnt know if anyone on here had first hand experience with it.

Im located In Buffalo NY, probably about 4 hours away from Windsor, however the 01 X I'm looking at is located in Michigan, and I plan on cutting thru Canada on the way out there, so I'll be right in your area. I saw that you sell some if not all of those products on your website, maybe I could get a cash s10 forum discount if I stop by .
