New Car Smell

im pretty sure this has been asked before. someone was sayin it was a chemical they spray in it all the time and the only reason it goes away is cuz you buy the car and they dont put it in anymore. does anyone know how to get this smell or where to buy it or something? i really want to klean the fizzuck out of my trizzuck (i admit that was gay) this weekend and next weekend (doubleup) and make it all nice and clean and new like i use to before semester started. anyone that can tell me how to get that new car smell it would be awesome. also anythign about how to get all the smells out of a car. i have tried a couple "smell removers" and "deoderizers" and those just seem to put in a funky smell that stinks even more when its warm out.

Re: New Car Smell

I worked at a carwash back in the day and we had a bottle of new car fragrance we could spray in for people. There are also new car air freshners you can buy at places like Wal*Mart. As for getting smells OUT, I'd suggest using a power sprayer from a carwash on the mats, then a handheld steam carpet cleaner on the seats / floor. They sell the cleaners at Wal*Mart, and there might be a small enough Rug Doctor you could just rent. Repeatedly clean the carpet / seats until the water sucked out of them is clean. Park it someplace like under a carport with all the windows open for a few days and it should be pretty smell-neutral. Then pop a few new car air freshners and hide them under the seats. And DON'T SMOKE or SPILL BEER in your truck anymore. Also, using Armor-All on your interior plastic leaves a new car like smell in your truck. Just be sure to keep it off the windows and clear plastic.

Re: New Car Smell

armor all cracks your dash, there are a lot better things to use on it and i just painted mine so im hesitant to **** it up.
the NEW CAR freshners always smell like ass. i found some good ones at walmart. about the size of a cup holder and tear drop shaped. only like 3 bucks. they are with the glade plug ins and stuff. i should take a pic and post it.
i was just wondering if anyone sells that new car smell or any way to get it. i MIGHT be able to garage it after i steam clean it. never thought about that one.

Re: New Car Smell

It's been rumored that protectants cause your dash to crack. THIS IS NOT TRUE. Protectants can keep surfaces looking good and protected from the elements that cause fading and cracking. Surfaces can't become "addicted" to protectants, and damage is a result of neglect, not use. Using a protectant regularly - especially one with UV protection - can keep your dash looking great for years.

that comes directly from armor all's website. although they're not going to say it'll crack dashes (obviously), what they might recommend is frequent applications. but since they don't do this i can only assume they're right. i've used armor all cleaning spray before and haven't used it for probably 4 monthes. not sure if it "causes" the same problems or not.

Re: New Car Smell

Once the new car smell is gone, it's gone for good. The smell is from all the new plastic interior pieces, adhesives and sealers giving of a small amount of gas. The only way to really get it back, is to buy a new ride.

what about the people who test drive it? wouldnt all those people take the smell out?

even the cars that sit there in the lot for a while and get driven still have the smell.

Re: New Car Smell

That is because they are being used on a daily basis...every test drive isn't going to last more than 4 miles or so, plus they aren't gonna spill beer or smoke in the ride at all!

Although there's plenty of scented products out there that are supposed to mimic this but I don't think it's possible to truly replicate.

A good place to put ugly air freshners is under the seats. That way you don't have to look at them.

It is strange that people like the "new car smell" when it is, like you said, off gassing of the chimicals, dyes, glues, plastics, etc, etc from new material.
I did a little research a while back and it was not so much the "fragrance" as it was the "association" of the fragrance to a new car.

One thing to think about..., "if" it was really the "new car smell" everyone liked, one of the air fresheners for the home would have a scent for the home..., instead, it is the smell that we think of a new car having- plastics, glues, chemicals, etc, etc...

Just something to "ponder", LOL!!

Re: New Car Smell

i just need to get it smelling good again. i had it all cleaned out but in the past year i just havent EVER had time to fully clean it. i need to get a shampoo job in there. ive thought if redoing the ENTIRE interior black (dark graphite) and possible getting the new smell but thats not cost efficent. i might ask a friend who works at the dealership what they got, if anything.

There are several company's that do make a scent that does resemble the smell.
You can PM me and I will try to find the link.

One option is to look for a "leather" air freshener

Re: New Car Smell

another option is Febreezing the hell out of the truck and leaving it with the doors or windows open all night. That'll remove any kind of smell in there and now just re-stink it with the stink of your choice

Re: New Car Smell

That new car smell goes away faster when you eat in your car, like fast food,,, get your carpets wet and clean the interior all the time.

Re: New Car Smell

ok tats kinda creepy, but anyways dont ever EVER buy that $0.96 bottle of spray stuff at walmart, it smells like a cross between vannila and "new car scent" as they call it. but if u spray it and it gets hot inside ur truck it reeks bad, and my bottle leaked and got everywhere! it also gets sticky after a while.
