Re: My hood has little cracks on it

It's called "Crowsfoot". It's caused by bad mixing of the clearcoat...Only way to get rid of it is to sand and repaint. (my jeep had that and that's the only solution)

Do you reckon anything can be done since its the factories fault? I have it just on my hood and roof. Is this a major issue about the clear with these vehicles. Recalls?

No recalls... If it's still under warranty you might have something.

Re: My hood has little cracks on it

Could be caused by excessive mil thickness. This was a common problem at Chevrolet, especially on black trucks

Re: My hood has little cracks on it

I have the same problem. I was looking arround on this problem is really common on the 94-95 black SS's. I wish I knew a way of fixing the problem.
I have thought of doing a light sand, and painting over it. And then buffing it out just to fill in the cracks. If anybody has any IDEAS let us know...
Thanks Dan

94-95 had a serious problem. Wasn't uncommon to find that the black had been painted several times from the factory. I once stripped a 94 hood that had been painted 8 times. The paint had small cracks and crazing on the showroom floor.

Check the mil thickness with a tinsley gauge or an elcometer first. Just light sanding and reshooting may not solve the problem.

Re: My hood has little cracks on it

My truck's got them too, pretty much all over the body. My dad has a black 96 S-10 and before that had a black 88 Astro and both of those had it too. If anyone ever comes up with a solution, I'd be first in line to try it. For now, I'm just planning on eventually repainting the whole truck. Just a matter of time and money.

Re: My hood has little cracks on it

Actually it can still be seen from 20 ft away. It sorta reflects the sun in little scratchy halo looking marks. Not so much a crack...like little tiny scratches sorta like the paint is dried out. I'm thinking of trying some Meguiars Scratch-X on my tailgate to see if it works...if it does I'll do the whole truck lol

Re: My hood has little cracks on it

Earlier in the week I buffed out my roof with a fine cut compound and it sort of lightened the cracks up. I am going to try it again, and take a little bit more of the clear coat out of it. I also put some black turtle wax on there, and it helped it out
But I will let ya know

Re: My hood has little cracks on it

my truck has it also. i wet sanded and buffed the shit out my hood and its still there. i work at a chevy dealership so i talked to a bunch of the body shop guys and they all told me that the truck has to be stripped down to bare metal and repainted to get rid of it. you cant just skotch brite it and repaint it, itll just come back

Re: My hood has little cracks on it

i've got a black '94 blazer tahoe LT that used to be green with the same problem on the hood and roof. you can't just sand and paint it, it does have to be stripped to bare metal. Nu-Finish works kinda, but the cracks are still very noticeable. (especially in the sun)

Re: My hood has little cracks on it

my trucks hood had that crows foot also. i have heard many rumors from bad primer to messed up clear. so i just stripped it down to the bare metal and refinished it. that was a year and a half ago and no problems yet!
