Mothers Clay bar
this stuff is amazing! I had overspray on my truck and i had waxed for 2 hours and gotten a small spot clean. I go and buy this stuff and i have the whole hood done in 20 minutes. It is well worth the 15 bucks! I would recommend it to everyone that has rough paint from overspray. |

I just did it today, wash, clay bar, polish, wax.. yeah that was an all day thing. I always clay bar the whole thing, you can just do certain areas if you want but I think its best you do the whole thing. The thing you have to remember is, when you clay bar, it removes EVERYTHING, including the wax thats already on there. Obviously you don't want to ride around with no wax, so after you do it, always wax the truck up real nice immediatly afterwards.
The mothers kit comes with a small bottle of their wax, but use whatever you like. Last edited by V6MaroFL : 08-06-2003 at 01:58 AM. |

Well it comes with some kind of detailer stuff to saturate the area, then you rub the clay on there, and wipe it down with a clean cloth. You shouldn't have anything left on the surface after all these steps.

offthehook. You are NOT using enough of the apray when using the bar. You need to spray almost continuously.

I have used it and it does work great but you dont really need the spray they give you. I ran out and use car wash soap and water and it works just as well

well i've been thinkin of getting the clay bar, but i dunno if its really gonna solve my problems. My truck has REALLY bad swirls in it (2001 Black truck) and a few scratchs. And now the swirls are starting to get that hazey/glazey look (under direct sunlight) suggestions anyone?

Clay bar will NOT remove swirles. It is only for paint contaminants, like acid rain, fallout, etc... Wetsand and buff its for swirles.

If you run out of the detailer spray you can just pick up more where ever you got the clayber from or any place that sells Mothers products.
I clay bar the entire machine after it's washed. Then I use a paint sealer/glaze to hide swirls and give it a super gloss shine. Then wax. I clay bar every spring or early summer, wash once a week and wax every 2-3 weeks |

Pep boys should carry, I'm suprised autozone doesn't, you might want to check again. And yeah it should take out any dots you have in your paint, it works wonders on my white car.

It takes a while but it will remove all stuck on crap like fallout and road tar etc. If your paint has swirls from washing and cleaning etc Use the clay bar first, then use Meguiar's scratch X or deep crystal system, then WAX. if you want to use all Mothers products use the clay bar, then the scratch remover or the sealer/glaze then wax. I just did my beat up truck and it took me a day and a half but it looks like friggin new. |

I just bought the clay bar and I used it on a spot on my hood. It did a good job. When I use it next, I'll do before and after pictures and then post them for discussion.

How about overspray from repair sections?
I need to do some spot repairs. The most obvious is along the roof edge above the door opening. Im not ready to repaint the whole roof yet, so Im only going in about 6" from the edge.
Color is black so shade-blending is not an issue, but I am using enamel since laquer will dull-out too soon. I will have some rough edge overspray at the edges of the repair perimiter where the new & old paint meet. I was wondering what sort of compound would be best to get out the overspray. Would the clay bar be the right thing? |

I dont have the resources to paint a large section anymore.
(equipment, bad neighbors, local zoning, EPA B-S, etc). I'm considering a complete repaint, possibly next year. But I need to repair these few eyesore spot sections in the meantime. I can do the spot repair in my driveway, then I've got a small compressor & and a large airbrush. |

I have a friend that touches up his S-10 with an airbrush. He gets good results and he doesn't have to redo a whole panel, just a small area.
You might try that if you need to do small area touch-ups. |

Thats what Im gonna do, but I'm using enamel, not laquer, so
there will be an area of dull overspray where the new & old meet. (Last year, I did another spot in Laquer so it would be eaiser to blend & compound, but it dulled within a few months). What I have is not really an "artist's" air brush, but a mini-gun. The kind that has a top trigger & an 8oz cup. I can no longer use my good Devillbis & autobody stuff, due to local neighborhood problems. |

clay bars are great I worked in a detail shop and we always used it before every wax right after the wash. But u dont need the spray, water works just as well. Its just 4 lubrication. Always wax your ride right after cause that stuff takes off everything but the clear. We didnt like the mothers we used one called clay magic made by a company called auto magic you can pick up the blue bar at autozone or a heavy duty red one at specialty shops or online. the red is great for heavy stuff like tar or sap. oh always use it up and down or side to side never circular or it will scratch. And be sure to kneed the clay to always use clean surfaces or it will scratch. it also works good on windows before your windo cleaner but always use water.
