Meguiar's 3 part wax system: Follow Along
I went to the auto parts store last night to get some cleaner wax for the wife's Saturn. I was looking throught the isle with the wax and saw the new Meguiar's 3 part wax "System." Well I have to try new things so I picked up a bottle of each to the tune of about $16 (for all three.)
This morning is overcast so it is the perfect time to wax. I read the directions on the bottles and got started. I decided to do half the hood which should make for some nice comparison pics. Here is a shot of the area I am going to do before I got started. It has been raining lately and I get a lot of bug guts all over the vertical surfaces cause I live in the boonies! |

Wash that nasty thing!
Here is a pic of the truck after I washed the entire hood, it would not be fair to to compare the waxed surface to a dirty surface. You can see the bottles of the Meguiar's wax system on the hood. notice the reflection of the bottles in the hood, we can compare that to the final results to see how good this stuff works.

When you get done with all the cleaner you should go buy Meguiars Medallion. You will love how it brings the depth back to black paint.

Apply the 1st step.
The first bottle in the system is a polish/cleaner. When I opened it up It smelled, looked and felt like 3-M Imperial Machine Glaze. I'd bet that that is exactly what it is. It sure cleans the same way and the 3-M stuff. Anyhow, put apply the stuff like the directions say, work in a very small area (6"X6") especially if you have a dark color truck. Wipe the cleaner off as soon as it hazes over! DO NOT LET IT SET ON THE PAINT! Wipe it off with a separate terrycloth towel. You will stt that this stuff takes a lot of old dead paint off. Here is a before pic of my application cloth.

Here is the after shot.
This is from doing a 6"X12" area. This stuff really cuts the oxidation layer well. I still think it is 3-M Imperial Machine Glaze!

A comparison pic.
Notice the difference in the two halves of the hood. We are working on the drivers side of the hood (on the right in this pic.)

Step #2
Apply the Step #2 bottle of cleaner. Notice that there is still a lot of paint coming off on the towel. It is VERY important for you to work in small (6"X6") areas and wipe this stuff off immediately after it hazes over. Check ou my application towel during the step #2 process.

And Apply the wax in Step #3
Apply the wax of Step #3 in small areas. Again remove the wax after each small area. By now you arm is falling off from the work! Here is a quick comparison shot.
I cracked a filling in a tooth and I have to go to the dentist now....I'll post some more pics when I return, spo try not to whore up the thread too much till I can get back and finish! ![]() |

The reflection shot.
You were all well behaved while I was gone! Now pat yourselves on the back. The dentist trip was bad...as usual! I hate the dentist. Thank my mother for bad teeth. Anyway, here is the reflection shot after Step #3. Ihad to put the bottles up on the valance because they kept sliding off the hood in the place where I was putting them in the other shots, that says something about what is going on with the wax system.

Another shot of the finished half hood.
On the way back from the dentist it started to rain. After I pulled into the driveway I checked out the hood to see how well the water was beading. It looks kind of weird, the beads of water are really tiny, not like you would expect. I don't know why the beads are so small but it must have something to do with the wax because the rest of the truck that has fresh wax on it still has the normal sized beads. Weird!
Here is another shot of the hood for comparison. |

Been there, done that on at least 4 cars a jeep and my truck.
Best thing to use a polishing angle grinder (low rpm). Beats the hell out of sore arms and shoulders. Plus you can really work the polish to get swirls and scuffs out of the paint. The stuff really does a good job though. |

Final thoughts.
Well now, what do I think of the 3 step "system." I'm not that impressed. The final result is far superior to what I started out with ......but....... I have been getting results like this for years with the Imperial Machine Glaze and Wax Shop Liquid Wax. Now I admit that from a dollar standpoint that it is about half the price to use the Meguiar's system than the other system that I mentioned. So while Meguiars has saved us some money they really haven't given us anything we didn't have before. Since this stuff is sold at a lot of retail places it is easier to get a hold of than the professional grade stuff.
If you have a truck that hasn't been given it's share of tender loving care and you need to renew the paint to get it looking acceptable again the Meguiar's 3 Step System will do the job, save you money while doing it and it is a lot easier to get your hands on. I will keep using this stuff....but it didn't work well enough to keep me from trying other products that come along. One final shot. |

LaynLo: Like I said...I bet the Meguiar's Step 1 is 3-M Imperial Machine glaze. Go buy the Meguiar's because it is a lot cheaper and does the same quality job. I would also recommend a 5" wool bonet with an electric drill to apply the stuff....saves the arms a !@#$%^&&* workout!!
Hutch: I only washed half the grill....those are all the bugs and guts all over the grill......ummmm...kind of makes me hungry! Last edited by rhenry01 : 09-10-2002 at 04:48 PM. |

yeah they did give us 1 thing a sore elbow and a chipped filling
![]() why do you use the imperial glaze over the 3m carnuba wax??? i use the 3m polish then the pure carnuba wax that smells so damn good and goes on easy as hell comes off just as easy... and very few swirls because it goes on in straight lines instead of swirling it on... though the wax is like 20 a tub for me and the polish is 15 for me (compares to 30 and 40 retail) it works great and i get a lot of use form it because it doesnt take much |

Here is what I use.
I use a Foam Buffing pad on a Dewalt angle grinder (lowest possible speed) 1st use Meguiars Medium Cut Cleaner 2nd use Meguiars Fine Cut Cleaner 3rd use Meguiars Swirl Mark Remover 4th hand apply Mequiars Medallion All the above steps are removed by hand with 100% cotton cloths Keep in mind that my system is much more expensive. The Medium, Fine and Swirl remover are about 10 bucks for each bottle. And the Medallion is close to 20 bucks. If you have ever seen pics of my truck you will see why I do this. ![]() |

yeah cuz its a piece of chit
![]() and uhhh the price retail on the stuff i use is still higher for just the 2 bottles... might start adding in the meguires swirl remover i always end up with them on my hood nowhere else it seems.... but the retail on the stuff i use is outrageous... but i guess a porche or mercedes owner can afford it since i get it at cost from the dealership my buddy works for |
