How To: Polish Aluminum Wheels (flouring)

OK, I get a few requests for me to show people the steps i use to polish my aluminum
wheels. I sat down today, spent a good 1/2 hour and went threw MY process of keeping my
old aluminum rims looking better than new. Sorry for the dark pics..I am however in
Canada, and electricity is a luxury..im limited to 1 light bulb Hope you enjoy!

Supplies:
-powerball
-mothers billet polish
-micro fiber polishing cloths
-poor boys wheel sealant
-mastercraft electric drill
-WHITE BREAD FLOUR

Theres some of my supplies layed out.

I give the wheel a wipe to get rid of dust, road debris, and whatever else i dont want
on my wheel. Then i take my can of Billet, and scoop some out with my fingers and
spread it over the entire wheel.

THIS is the flour step. the purpose of the flour is to cut deep and bring out all the
oxidization that is in the pits of the wheel. I basicly just throw the flour ontop of
the polish, and i use lots!!

Then i hit the wheel with my powerball and really work the flour and polish into the
wheel. I polish it untill the wheel is very warm to the touch and the polish starts to
turn a dark, hazy color.

After the powerball action, i get my microfiber cloth out and buff away all the dry hazy
polish. I always rip the tags off my cloths so i dont scrath my wheels more than they
already are.

After you buff the wheel with the cloth, you can now test out your polishing job! If im
not careful, i can become very obsessed with polish these wheels..cause every time i go
over them again, they get better. So i have to decide for myself when enough is
enough!! Im satisfied with this.

I love Coke..so i had to include it here somehow!! the big ol' 2 liter bottle was just
waiting for some attention

After im satisfied with the polishing job, Its sealant time. Im trying out the Poorboys
Wheel sealant thati got from 20/20 Kustoms.

I spread lots on..and DAMN does it ever smell good!! i do 3 coats of sealant. I
dont know how many i should do or what, so i just keep going!
After all my hard work on this wheel..Its time to take it outside and see how she looks
when the sun hits it.

Looks really good outside..But i gotta get back inside now, cause that friggen canadian
snow is COLD!! BURRRRRRR

NOW, you can go a setep futher here. After your done with the flouring, and buffing it off, you can get out the latex glove if you like. What you do, is put the glove on, take some polish on your fingers, and manualy polish with your fingers. This step will take all the little micro scratches out of the wheel that the agressive powerball leaves behind. I did this step to mywheels once, but let me tell you..MY ARMS WERE SORE!!! SO WERE MY FINGIES!! So this step is only for the truely obsessed wheel polisher.

Re: How To: Polish Aluminum Wheels (flouring)

A question for you, do you wash your microfiber cloths and the powerball afterwards or just toss them? If you wash it in the machine, doesn't it get everything kind of black inside there? I want to wash my cloths but don't want the wife putting a hate on afterwards.

Re: How To: Polish Aluminum Wheels (flouring)

yea it works by hand also
all the flour does is cut down and bring out all the oxidation in the metal..i found that any powder will work (flour, baby powder..)

Re: How To: Polish Aluminum Wheels (flouring)

How long does this typically take per wheel?

I've got the same wheels and they are DIRTY. I plan on doing this in the near future. How do you get to the surfaces that are in the holes? Does the powerball get all the surfaces or do you have to do those by hand? Thanks for the write up.

Re: How To: Polish Aluminum Wheels (flouring)

ok, i found a bad @SS polish. Picked up some over the weekend at Carl Casper. www.metalgloss.com this sh!t is the BOMB!!!!!!!

I have tried it out on everything from brass, silver, chrome, aluminum, copper, etc...
No hard scrubbing, no wait time for the polish. wipe it on wipe it off, then when you use the sealer wipe it on let it hase up after a couple of min. and wipe off. seals for up to a year. The guy said seal your wheels 2-3 times a year. water beads up and just slides right off. you guys should check it out.

I think i may become a dealer for these guys.

We use a disposible powder free nitrile glove at work. The company is called Best Nitrile (who would have guessed). It can hold up to atleast 45 minutes dunked in thinner before its crap. If that doesn't work... maybe one could use the diskwashing type gloves?

Quick google search website. Its the economy ones

Re: How To: Polish Aluminum Wheels (flouring)

I don't have a powerball yet, would an illegal mexican work just as good you think? I noticed the powerball the other day. I shook it, but it didn't say anything. So I was wiery of buying it....So I take it, the powerball is a descent if not great investment? Thanks for the how-to man.

P.S. no illegal mexicans were harmed in the making of this post. So don't flame me.
