HOW TO - clear 98-up GMC headlights

I Can See Clearly Now the Amber is Gone

So everyone with a 98-03 GMC sonoma, here is how to get the all clear look for your headlights.

First remove the the headlights. Pulling up the two blackclips. Then removing the bulbs.

Tools you will need to attempt this will be a heat gun, putty knife, flat head screwdriver, and clear drying silicone perferably one used for bathrooms or showers so it wont be effected by weather.

Remove the 5 clips from the back of the light use a flat head to pop them off.

use the heat gun to carefully remove the black outer layer. BE CAREFUL these can be very fragile so avoid breaking them.Go along the edge with the putty knife to break loose the glue.

When that is off use the heat gun to separate the clear lens from the black backing. Make sure not to get the plastic to hot. Slowly use the putty knife or the screw driver to remove the lens. Again BE CAREFUL the plastic breaks very easy!!!
Make sure all sides are loose and carefully pry the hole lense up.

Remove the 2 amber pieces from the light. the should just fall out.

Re-attach the cover and use the silicone to seal the lights. To make sure there is a nice tight fit put the clips on right after.

Clean the edge using a putty knife or your finger works very well.

Re-attach the black outer shell. with the silicone. Make sure you let it dry fully.

and there you have it done. Make sure you do this carefully doing it wrong can result in broken lights. And unnecessary spending.

have fun and bring beer

Re: HOW TO - clear 98-up GMC headlights

Good write up! I popped mine in the oven for about 10 min at 350f and it worked well. Good for those without a heat gun. It does smell like crap wrapped in burnt hair, but it works.

Re: HOW TO - clear 98-up GMC headlights

Good job. I would feel much safer using a heat gun than the oven.

Re: HOW TO - clear 98-up GMC headlights

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i could not find a thread on this for the 98 and up with the full amber on the bottom of the light. i tried asking around in the other threads but their write ups only had the clear corner ones. i have been wanting to do this for the longest time but wasnt to sure how it would look. its looks pretty good. did you have to change the color of the bulbs? cuz thats what someone else said in a diff thread.

Thanks!

Only shitty deal is the drivers side light rubs against the fender, so the rubber part bulges out. I think something might be tweeked after the pervious owner plowed into a snow bank with it

Re: HOW TO - clear 98-up GMC headlights

i dont think it matters.. just give it heat until u can slowly remove it! just dont get to close to the lense cause if you heat it up to much it clouds!!!

Re: HOW TO - clear 98-up GMC headlights

try putting it on a piece of dense wood. Putting it straight on the rack will melt the plastic onto the rack.
