Question how do I get rid of paint of imperfections???

I detailed a car for a lady today, it is a 2001 Altima. It's white, and the paint is in pretty bad shape, it was not smooth even after a good wash, and a spray wax. But, the problem is in a few spots (rear bumber, hood, and passengers side) the paint has scuffs in it that did not come out. I told her I could come back with a buffer, and some polish and buff it out, but truthfully I have no idea how to get them out. It feels like she has no clear coat left. What do I need to buy to fix it? the buffer i have is just your run of the mill wax buffer, nothing high-powered. help.

I would recommend using clay bar after washing it really good to remove surface containments. Then follow up with an abbrasive swirl and scratch remover. Poorboy's Super Swirl Remover would be my recommendation for removing swirls, oxidation & most scratches. You can use this by hand but I would recommend using a random orbital polisher. A good choice is the Porter Cable Polisher. Then I would follow up with a good polish. Adam’s Revive Polish or Poorboy's Professional Polish are great choices.

From there you can use a sealant or go right to a wax. For sealant I would recommend Poorboy's EX-P.

As for wax, everyone has their own opinions. IMO I would use Adam's Butter Wax or Poorboy's Natty's Paste Wax.

Hopefully that wasn't too confusing.

Note: Poorboy's & Adam's products arn't found at your local auto store you can find them online at www.poorboysworld.com & www.adamspolishes.com

Re: how do I get rid of paint of imperfections???

I didn't think about the cay bar. I have never used one, but the spots I am talking about look like dirt, but they did not come out w/ wash and spray wax. Would the claybar and a good waxing take care of them?...I am not going to order anything special to do it, i will only make $15 extra dollars, so anything more than that and its not worth it for me. thanks for the info though.

If the paint feels rough then you should use a clay bar. If you wax without taking any of the containments than you sealing the dirt and grime under the wax. A claybar will cost you about $15-20 USD and you can find one at any auto store.

To your question, the claybar will help take out the "dirt" but it will not remove any scratches. Give the clay a try and go from there. If the area still looks harsh then a good paint cleaner/polish would be needed.

Just as a follow up, I went to get the claybar today. I looked around for a while, and ended up getting Turtle Wax Cleaning compound. It only cost like $3 bucks, and it worked wonders on her car. Took everything out of the paint, even light scratches.

Good stuff! Make sure you give that area a good coat of wax.

nice seeing some real advice to go with the typical "claybar it" advice.
i think its the 7424 thats so popular over at autopia, and the brands of polish and wax that you mentioned are on that site alot.

anyway, point was, nice advice.
