hood insulation

ok i searched but didn't find anything. anybody have any tips on cleaning the hood insulation. that fiberglass mat that is mounted to the underside of the hood. i mainly have general dirt but there is some white chemical residue as well. i have it off right now because of another project, and would just like to clean it up.

thanks for any advise.

Re: hood insulation

Yeah I wouldnt get it wet. A few years ago a oring for the heater line blew and coated the underside of my hood. After that the insulation has been sagging and the outer surface is hangin in shreds, it looks like hell. Im probaly going to just pull mine off and leave it.

Does getting rid of hood insulation damage the paint?
What purpose does it serve other than to protect the hood paint?

Re: hood insulation

Keep heat in the engine bay and not up on the bottom of your hood...where it could crack the paint on top of your hood.

Re: hood insulation

I've always taken the ones off of my first gens if they have that crap and never had paint problems. My V8 truck had the factory hood and never got hot enough to cause the paint to flake or bubble up, even while I was having overheating problems with the motor.

Like he said Its not to protect the paint. Its "suppose" to reduce engine noise.

Re: hood insulation

I ditched mine for clearance reasons almost a year ago and the paint is still perfect. I didn't notice any difference in sound levels

i think he meant customers came in with there vehicles and he saw that they had done that. Not that it was a service they provided.

No my stock hood was ran forever w/o the insulation and never got cracks. Do you really think that cheap, thin piece of insulation is really going to protect the hood from that much heat. its probably only 10-20degrees cooler w/ it on at the most.

Paint is 20 years old and besides the rock chips on nose and the clear peeling all over the middle of the hood is the best looking spot on the blazer. Mine been off for at least 6 years that I know of now.

Re: hood insulation

I'll be a bit more clear and concise.

Step #1 Open dumpster lid.
Step #2 Put hood insulation inside dumpster.
Step #3 Close dumpster lid.

That bit of advise was free. You're welcome.

Re: hood insulation

oh i get it now. hahaha.

ok seriosly tho. wouldnt taking the insulation off actually kinda help with the engine heat? it seems like the insulation would trap the heat in there. as to where if you took it off it might let it out a little better.
does that make sense to anyone else?
