Goo Gone

I am about to take the vinyl stripes off of my Xtreme on my next day off. My 2 questions are...Will there be a faded area around where the stripes were (white truck)? Also will goo gone harm my paint if I were to use it to get off any glue left on the paint?

Re: Goo Gone

I took those stripes off of my truck last year (I have an 02). It is in excellent condition. Anyway, I HIGHLY recommend that you use a rubber wheel to remove the stripes. They sell them at Napa. 3M makes them specifically for that purpose. FYI make sure to go really slow with the drills RPM or you will screw up your clear coat.

After I removed the stripes I used goo gone to remove the residue. Goo gone will not hurt your paint however it WILL remove the wax. Therefore, you will need to was after finished.

As for the fading since you have white I doubt it will be that noticeable. I have a dark blue S10 and could just barely see where the striper were. Keep in mind the pain underneath will also be pristine therefore making the lines a tad bit noticeable.

I would still recommend that you take them off. Its better to do it sooner than later.

Thanks for the info man. I am going to give it a whirl on Wednesday. Is there a specific name for this rubber wheel other than just 3m? Can I use it with my dewalt? edit: thanks for all the help all my questions have been answered from the removing decal thread that just resurfaced.

Re: Goo Gone

No problem!

The rubber wheel is simply called a 3M Stripe Off Wheel. Says it right on the package. Make sure when you buy it, that it has the whole assembly in there (they sell just the rubber wheel in some kits).

Heres an example of one:
3M Industrial Products Catalog: adhesives, tapes, abrasives and more

I used it with my Dewalt varible speed power drill. Just make sure that you keep the speed low! If not you will mess up your clear coat.

The idea is to keep the wheel at a high enough RPM where it is not "sticking" or jumping to the surface. Just above that is where you want to be. Faster is not better in this case. Watch really closely to see if you are doing any damage to the clear. It will look like it has ripples in it if you go too fast. I had this happen to me before I learned how to use it. Luckily its only a little 1/2" spot where this happened.

The wheel is also good for removing dealer names. You know those stickers they insist on putting on there!

Re: Goo Gone

someone mentioned above that goo gone will NOT harm your paint??...false...ive recently had that happen to me..in pretty much the same circumstance...i used it to remove the residue off of my body where the s10 molding strips along the side of the truck are...and i guess i let some goo gone sit too long or something...but i now have gnarly faded areas where the goo gone was...and my truck is white...so yes...becareful with it...make sure when your done, that all the goo gone is off anything important.

Re: Goo Gone

Did you have your truck repainted?

I guess I should have mentioned that I gave it a bath and a waxing right after I removed the stripes.

Honestly I have used goo gone on the exterior paint and have never had a problem. I make sure to wipe the areas off REALLY well after I finished using them. As I said above it will strip the wax off. Maybe that was what you were seeing? This is a solvent we are talking about after all!

PS. When using a solvent always test it on an inconspicuous area before using it on the exterior (like under the door or something).

Re: Goo Gone

I used it after I de-badged the dime. Worked out okay. Just a lot of repetitve motion and whatnot. Didn't seem to do any harm to the paint, so for all I can tell you should be fine. But don't let it sit long.
