Getting rust off of rims?

I havenon-stock rims on the truck that I just bought, and they look pretty shitty. They're all rusted, and crappy looking. Haha.

How do I know what they're made of (they're silver ), AND, how do i get rid of the rust, and making them nice and shiny?

Sanding it down, will just expose more areas to future rust.

Re: Getting rust off of rims?

Unfortunately once you get rust to the point you described there really is no way of getting rid of it unless you get them sanblasted or chemical dipped. It doesn't seem to matter what paint or product I've used if there's rust under it, it will almost always resurface. The only thing I can think of that is half decent is POR-15, but I doubt you want to use that on your rims!

Maybe the best advise is to check the for sale section or go to a local junk yard and see if you can get yourself a set of rims, the stock aluminum ones shouldn't be too pricey and I've seen guys polish those up really nice!!

Re: Getting rust off of rims?

Depending how bad they are rusted..., if you are just wanting to get rid of the rust, use a wire brush to remove the majority of the rust.

Then- go to a local body shop supply store and pick up a can of "Rust Converter" Wal-Mart also carries different brands, but it is not as good as the PRO stuff, IMO and I have used both

It will turn the rust areas black, but no longer rust...
I do not know what type wheels you have, the finish, color, material they are made or, if they are painted, etc, etc...

Hope this helps...

Re: Getting rust off of rims?

if they are chrome or polished aluminum u can take a brillo pad to them and follow up with a very intese polish afterwards but its very labor intensive

Re: Getting rust off of rims?

I use this stuff call "On & Off" on the boat to get rid of rust spots. One day, I noticed my radio antenna was full of rust, pitting and all. I pour a little bit of this stuff onto the antenna and believe me it looked like new and i didnt have to scrub, it just melted off. This stuff is lethal, it smokes up if you leave it on an area for a while. If you use it on your rims, it will probably get rid of the rust but may ruin the rest of the finish on them. Either way, it can be picked up at your local marine store.

Sanding it will just get rid of the finish too. You think I should just take it to some steel wool, and put polish on it?
