fully polished zq8's

Has anyone removed the clear coat and completely polished their zq8's? the newer ones.. I'm thinking about doing it when I get mine, but I may just see if I can't do it to some swirls just to see how it turns out. hate to ruin some nice new zq8's for testing..

Re: fully polished zq8's

what did you use to get the clear off Evenflow? I was thinking about using aircraft paint remover to take off the silver and the clear, and then just polishing from there... also thinking of a possible chrome dip...

Sandpaper in varying grits and lots of forearm strength lol. Dimeboy and I have been talking in PM but for any others who wish to do this:

We used Aircraft Stripper that we found at wallyworld to take the clear and paint off. Use alot and this part is pretty easy. The area in between the spokes has alot of texture once the paint is gone, you have to sand and sand forever. Start with like 180 or something and just work your way into finer sandpaper. Wetsanding and all that fun goodness and the use polishing or buffing compound at the end. 20 hours per wheel by hand - fun stuff

www.eastwood.com

These guys carry all kinds of polishing kits for everything. You can use a dremel or a high speed drill with some sanding bits, and what not.

Im going to do mine, but Im only polishing the spokes, the grey part will be satin black.

Re: fully polished zq8's

Ah, I just saw this thread. DONT DO IT!!! It's a MISERABLE process.

Evenflow is correct on the process. But it sounds a helluva lot easier than it actually is. I gotta thank him for helping me through most of it.

Re: fully polished zq8's

Wow...... this is very interesting.. So I have the older ZQ8 wheel's and I'm very interestested in doing this over the winter. Am I going to just end up destroying my wheels? I understand that its going to take hours and hours to do each one perfect but I feel it'd be worth it. I'd be doing it all by hand.. Should I do it?

Re: fully polished zq8's

ive done it on the old ZQ8's just took off all the clear coat with aircraft stripper, between the spokes on the new and old ones are painted grey, i would leave that unless you want hours of extra work. Just polish the face

Re: fully polished zq8's

I did it to three of mine. I ended up deploying to Iraq before I got started on the last one. I had to be ghetto and take one off at the time and use the spare tire in its place.
Trust me its a lot of work, and takes a lot of time and patience.
