Faded Mirrors, Grill & Door Handles

Just got a 99 S10 LS Extended cab.

Both mirrors, parts of the grill area and the door handles have started to fade from their original black color to a chalky gray'ish/white color. Any suggestions as to what I can apply to them to bring back the dark black color.. or am I resigned to buying all new parts?

Hello

Try using any good sealer or glaze on these parts, Mothers or 3M both worked well for me. Still have to do it quite often tho. Works great on taillights too.

But now I have handles, grille and new ss mirrors painted body color.

Meguiars makes some stuff called trim detailer if I remember right. Comes in a small black squeeze bottle. Works pretty good, but you have to keep using it. Lasts a couple of washes.

BTW, there's a service bulletin about fading mirrors. GM says the dealer should repaint them. Some fix.

Have no idea what the dealer would paint them with, but I'd use the same as the body. Might have to add some flex agent to it though. Check with a body shop on that.

There's also stuff out that's a vinyl paint for flexible vinyl surfaces. Not sure about colors, I had it in black. Used it on a motorcycle seat and it lasted for the 2 years I had it.

Personally, I just go with the trim detailer since there's so much plastic and rubber visible that I put it on anyway.

I just got a '94 S-10 with the same problem. The mirrors, doorhandles and the wiper cowl were all a nice shade of gray. Buy some 3M Plastic Cleaner and 3M Plastic Polish and prepare to use some elbow grease. If you work for a little while the plastic will come back to black in no time.

I bought a can of black spray paint... can't I just do it that way or not? Some areas of my truck are no longer black, but the metal actually shows through.

That being on my trims and stuff... like rear window and windshield washer blades and side mirrors
